May 5-11, 2024, marks National Hurricane Preparedness Week.
As residents of the South Carolina coast, we're aware of the risks posed by hurricanes and tropical storms. Despite being spared from significant impacts by hurricanes last year, it's crucial to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, running from June 1 to November 30. How can you get ready? Put together an evacuation kit with essential supplies: water, non-perishable food, battery-powered flashlights, radios, and items for your pets.
For detailed guidance on hurricane preparedness and additional storm resources, visit: https://hiltonheadislandsc.gov/ready/
For the latest updates on hurricanes and severe weather, always turn to official sources of information: • South Carolina Emergency Management Division • Beaufort County Sheriff's Office • Town of Hilton Head Island Government
Stay informed with real-time information on projected storm paths, wind speeds, and potential impacts from the National Hurricane Center (NHC). You can track weather conditions yourself at the NHC website: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
Thank you for prioritizing preparedness. Be sure to share this information with your loved ones to ensure everyone stays safe.

As these magnificent creatures return to our shores, let's do our part to ensure their safety and the success of their nesting season that started on May 1. Beach rules and reminders about sea turtles:
- No digging holes: Please refrain from digging large holes in the sand, as these can trap nesting turtles and hatchlings.
- Reduce artificial lighting: Sea turtles rely on natural light cues to navigate. Keep beaches dark at night, avoid using flashlights or strong beach lights.
- Remove beach gear: Take all beach chairs, umbrellas, toys, and other gear with you when you leave the beach. These obstacles can impede nesting turtles and hatchlings.
- Fill in holes: If you do dig holes, fill them back in before leaving the beach to ensure the safety of both humans and turtles.
- Respect marked nesting areas: If you spot a marked sea turtle nest, keep your distance and avoid disturbing it.
For more information on sea turtle conservation and how you can help, visit hiltonheadislandsc.gov or Sea Turtle Patrol Hilton Head Island. Let's work together to make this sea turtle season a safe and successful one for our beloved marine neighbors!
