Corridors Planning: Pedestrian and Vehicular Enhancements Project
Our Island is a growing, popular destination. Each year our residents are joined by hundreds of thousands of visitors walking, biking, and driving here. Past planning efforts over the decades have investigated how to safely convey residents and visitors from the mainland and through our transportation corridors. This resulted in the bridges we have today connecting the mainland to the Island. Once success was made getting people here from the mainland, the focus became moving people from the Island ‘gateway’ to Sea Pines Circle, more efficiently resulting in the construction of the Cross Island Parkway with Bridge to the Beach and Circle to Circle planning. Today, we are focusing corridor planning efforts on improving the consistency of the Island character.
The current Corridors Planning- Pedestrian and Vehicular Enhancements project includes all major Island corridors: William Hilton Parkway from Spanish Wells Road to Sea Pines Circle, Pope Avenue, Palmetto Bay Road, New Orleans Road, Arrow Road, and portions of North & South Forest Beach Drive immediately adjacent to Coligny Circle. The project is focused on improvements aimed at safety and beautification. Elements such as landscaping, signage, pathways, roadways, lighting, and crosswalks are being holistically reviewed and planned to initiate CIP projects for corridor improvements.
Our CIP staff recently held a series of stakeholder meetings to receive comments and ideas from business owners and community members about the corridors. Staff is currently working with MKSK, our consultant team, to identify solutions to present to Town leadership and community members later this year.

The Shelter Cove Connection is Open!
Offering sweeping views of Broad Creek and attention to public art this recently completed project is now open to the public. Walkers and bikers coming from the pathway on William Hilton Parkway or from Shelter Cove Community Park now have a complete pathway network to access the area. A beautiful new boardwalk offers interpretive signs and gorgeous views of Broad Creek. Swings and bench seating line the pathway at key points to allow for respite and peaceful enjoyment of the environment. Newly curated sculptures line the pathway and include a theater for rotating pieces. A parking area will serve as a future trailhead for the planned Chaplin Linear Park.
The Town plans to host a ribbon cutting ceremony for this completed project as part of the Crescendo event in the fall. Stay tuned for more details as we plan this exciting grand opening of the new linear park.
