Major Park Projects Update
Chaplin Community Park, Crossings Park, and Mid-Island Projects
In mid to late August the Town hosted several workshops, focus group meetings, and an Open Park Day event to kick off these exciting projects with our project consultants. The workshops held with Town Council and Parks and Rec Commission are linked in the Meeting Archive column of this newsletter.
The input gathered during the kick off sessions will be used to further inform and refine design decisions being made for the parks. If you were unable to follow any of the workshops or attend the Open House Day, there will be other opportunities as we progress with park planning. This was just the beginning of the process. Stay tuned to this newsletter for announcements about up-coming opportunities to participate.
Next Steps
Our two consultant teams have recently held a collaboration discussion to review the carrying capacity of each park site for the various recreation needs and amenities proposed. The good news is there is a lot of space to work with and great opportunity to meet community needs with these parks.
Our design teams are at their drawing boards to prepare initial concept plans for the parks. They will be preparing opportunities for Town Officials and the public to review and weigh in on the first round of design concepts this fall.
Other Park Projects
Islander's Beach Park Pavilion
Early this month the Town issued an Invitation for Bids to construct an accessible covered pavilion at Islander's Beach Park. The pavilion will be constructed adjacent to the boardwalk out to the beach and will overlook the dunes, beach, and ocean. The bid portal closes for submittals on September 30. Construction on the pavilion will begin soon after a contractor is selected.
This project satisfies Our Plan, Section 4.7, Action Item 2.4.1: Consider the addition of an accessible covered overlook at Islander's Beach Park to accommodate disabled residents, visitors, and their caretakers.
Taylor Ladd, Project Planner, will be managing this project.
Shelter Cove Connectivity Project
Construction recently began on this exciting project in the Shelter Cove area. Click here to read the full press release. The scope of work entails enhancing existing park areas and expanding the parking and pathway connectivity between Shelter Cove Community Park, the Veterans Memorial and William Hilton Parkway. Nix Construction Company was selected as the project contractor and construction has begun. This project is being managed by Shea Farrar, Landscape/Urban Design Associate.
