Announcing Consultant Teams and Kick-Off for Major Park Projects
The Town has contracted with two consultant teams who will conduct design services for three major park projects this fiscal year. This month we will be kicking off both projects. Check the calendar column for details.
Mid-Island Area Initiative Planning and Park Project
The Town has selected for this project a team led by MKSK, a planning, urban design, and landscape architecture practice with eight regional metropolitan studios. They are currently also working with the Town on land planning for the US 278/ William Hilton Parkway Gateway Corridor.
Andrew Overbeck, a Principal with MKSK, will serve as Project Manager. The team for the Mid Island project includes:
- MKSK: Lead, Planning & Development, Park Design
- Dover, Kohl & Partners: Urban Design
- Kimley-Horn: Resiliency & Market Analysis
- HDR: Transportation & Connectivity Planning
- LS3P: Park Architecture
- Cranston: Civil Engineering
Chaplin Community Park and Crossings Park Redevelopment Project
The Town has selected for this project a team lead by Wood+Partners Inc, a land planning and landscape architecture firm from Hilton Head Island. A recent local project they led was the Lowcountry Celebration Park.
Kyle Theodore, Wood+Partners Vice President, will serve as Principal-in-Charge and Team Leader for the project. Her team will be working closely with Design Workshop during the conceptual design process. Their team includes:

- Design Workshop: Design Advisor
- Watson Tate Savory: Architecture
- Thomas & Hutton: Civil Engineering & Stormwater Management
- Newkirk Environmental Inc: Environmental & Cultural Consulting
Next Steps
To start the process, there will be kick-off meetings this month for each project. This will entail workshops with Town Council and the Parks and Recreation Commission, and project dependent focus group or public engagement meetings.
At these meetings, our consultants will conduct preliminary discussions with Town Officials, stakeholders, and the public. See the calendar column on the left for the schedule.
