Parks Are On the Menu!
The Town is moving forward with big plans for Hilton Head Island parks! This year will see the planning and implementation of new and exciting outdoor spaces for Island residents and visitors to enjoy.
In January, the Parks and Recreation Commission voted unanimously to approve the parks and recreation project prioritization list and the proposed programming for the big projects at Chaplin Community Park, Crossings Park, and the Mid Island Tract.
With their approval, staff will begin taking next steps in the process and continue to include public input and engagement. We will work together to build parks for the Island that are reflective of community interests, professional analysis, and the Town's excellent public services.
Our Next Workshop...
We will continue the conversation on February 23 with Town Council for a special parks and recreation workshop. Staff will be presenting the Parks and Recreation Master Plan progress for Council review and discussion. Check back on the Town's Meeting Calendar for more details and to see the agenda packet when it is posted next week.
The workshop will be held virtually and can be viewed on the Town's Public Meetings Facebook Page. Following the meeting, the video record will be made available on the Town’s website.

Updates: Park Planning and Improvements
Chaplin Linear Park is proposed to connect Shelter Cove Community Park to Burkes Beach via Chaplin Community Park. This linear park will offer more than the typical multi-use pathway. Interpretation, public art, and other amenities, such as overlooks, will be installed as part of the pathway. Detailed design development for the park will begin this spring. As a TIF funded project, it will be completed by 2024.
Work continues at the Mid Island Tract (Town-owned portion of the former Planters Row Golf Course) to maintain the channels and to prepare the site for a soft opening. The Town is ensuring the site is safe to access and constructing a temporary, low impact parking area off Union Cemetery Road. There has been a lot of public support for opening the property so that residents and visitors can enjoy the existing trails until construction of the new park begins in the near future. Stay tuned for an official announcement of a soft opening this month. |

Similar to other parks on the Island, the Town will soon be installing gates at the parking lot entrances for Barker Field Extension, Crossings Park, Greens Shell Park and Bristol Sports Arena. Gates will be opened to allow vehicular access during daylight hours.
