Culture HHI Featured Artist of the Month

Musician Frederick Capers

fred capers

Known most widely on Hilton Head Island as the frontman for the band La Bodega Man, Frederick Capers is a prolific song writer and musician.

Born of the pluff mud, the Lowcountry is part of his very being. The thump of Gullah drums echoes in his chest. Listening to his lyrics, you’ll feel the wind whisper as it snakes through Spanish moss and sea reeds. It feels both foreign and familiar. His music can be otherworldly, and at the same time make you feel right at home.

Read the full write up about Frederick online here or check out his feature in this month's Local Life magazine.

“The Day of Jubilee Has Come”

The Dawn of Reconstruction in the SC Lowcountry

Chris Barr – National Park Service

On January 1st, 1863, the men of the 1st South Carolina Volunteers were presented with a flag emblazoned with the phrase “The Day of Jubilee Has Come.” But the day of jubilee was only the beginning. What happened here in the South Carolina Lowcountry was the birth of a decades long process to reconstruct the American social, political, and economic landscape – a story now told by Reconstruction Era National Historical Park.

Chris Barr is the supervisory interpretive ranger at Reconstruction Era National Historical Park. He has worked for the National Park Service for eight years, previously at Andersonville National Historic Site and Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, where he conducted programs and research on Reconstruction in those locations.

Abstract x3 @ the Art League of Hilton Head

abstract x3

This January, Art League of Hilton Head showcases abstract art three ways in Abstract x 3, an exhibit of work by local artists Rose Cofield, Jennifer Rocco Stone and George Watson. Inspired by the use of bright colors and textures, women’s interior emotional landscapes, and the free-flowing shapes of blown glass and handmade pottery, the works by Cofield, Stone and Watson show three very distinctive points of view.

Cofield is a sculptor-turned mixed media artist. Her latest work reflects her love of vibrant colors and shapes. She has taught sculpture workshops in South Carolina schools and arts organizations, while her 2D work has been selected for shows both locally and in New York.

Stone is a retired public school art teacher. Her work consists of contemporary depictions of women combining her skills in figure drawing and the unpredictable quality of abstract art and pure bold color-saturated abstract canvases. Stone has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibits in the New York and New Jersey area.

Watson is a glassblower and potter, as well as a 2D artist. Full of vivid color and whimsical brushstrokes, his paintings consist of forms, shapes and patterns echoed in his glasswork and pottery.

Abstract x 3 will be held January 5-30, 2021
Art League of Hilton Head Gallery @ the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina
