Arts Education Glows with Delight

Arts Center Partners with HHI School for Creative Arts on Youth Lantern Parade Display

by Alana Adams

In 2006 the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina adopted Hilton Head School for the Creative Arts with the mutual goal of integrating the arts into the elementary curriculum through expanded services and enrichment programs utilizing the Arts Center’s resources.

When the Office of Cultural Affairs announced the Hilton Head Island Lantern Parade, to be held on November 9, 2019, it was a natural instinct for the Arts Center to reach out to the school to assist their budding artists with their lantern parade entries.

With the current trends in STEAM education (weaving together Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) the Lantern Parade created a perfect outlet to showcase how these brain-building subjects all work together in harmony.

Soon thereafter, the Arts Center’s Sr. Director of Education, Alana Adams met with Gretchen Keefner, Principal at HHISCA, and right away they two began brainstorming how the students could create a collaborative illuminated lantern sculpture that would allow as many students as possible the opportunity to participate in the community event.

Keeping with the theme of the parade, to celebrate to celebrate the history, ecology and people of Hilton Head Island, the school decided to create a 7’ long illuminated shrimp boat that will serve as a focal point for the school’s submissions.

Mrs. Adams and the school’s STEAM teacher, Dr. Cifaldi, are working with the Engineering Club to design, engineer, and construct this massive centerpiece.  Art Club students will be creating seagulls to hover around the boat and first graders, who learn about light and shadow in science, will be working on fish lanterns to swim alongside the boat.

All teachers at the school are invited to have their students participate in making additional lanterns for the display and the school will even be having a free Family Night in late October, which will give an opportunity to any student in the school to bring their family to work on a lantern together.

Collectively the school hopes to light up the beach with a beautiful display that celebrates our coastal waterways which are such an integral part of our lives here on Hilton Head Island.

"Eloquent Light" at the Art League

bill bogle

Art League Gallery will host Eloquent Light, a collection of landscape photography by local artist Bill Bogle, Jr., this October. The exhibit includes familiar lowcountry scenes of Spanish moss-draped live oaks and oceanfront dunes, the vibrant red rock formations of the American west, and solemn views along the New England coast. Bogle’s passion and success lie in recording moments when the light reveals his subjects at their most meaningful.

He has been displaying and selling his photographs for the past 15 years. His work can be seen in local galleries such as the Society of Bluffton Artists and the Beaufort Art Association.
