Why Pedal HHI Matters?
by Frank Babel
Thirteen years ago, a few friends and I came up with the idea of organizing a community bike ride to raise awareness of biking on Hilton Head Island. Coincidentally, the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island was thinking about how to create another fund raiser to expand programs and diversify its donor and volunteer base.
We connected and with the support of Town staff, the BCSO, SCDOT and hard work from some dedicated Boys & Girls Club board members, Pedal came into being. The first ride was a success, more followed, and the rest is history.
Pedal is now the second largest annual fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island. It also was a pillar in Hilton Head Island’s successful quest to become internationally recognized as a certified Bicycle Friendly Community.
The impact of Pedal on the Boys & Girls Club was significant. Leaders and riders in a number of gated communities participated, enjoyed the event and through Pedal, “discovered” the good work of the Club.
The Boys & Girls Club of Hilton Head Island has become one of the island’s top non- profits with amazing leadership, dedicated professional development staff and diverse volunteer team helping over 250 children daily, making a huge difference in their lives. Pedal also has evolved from a yearly Island recreational community ride to a top notch Regional biking event.
So to all of you out there on our beautiful Island, explore what’s happening with Pedal, November 16th, 17th and 18th – Two concerts at Coligny Theatre with Music of the Grateful Dead, a beach obstacle course ride on Saturday and the main ride on Sunday, November 18th.
Pedal benefits a great charity in our community, positively effects children in our community, and if you ride, it’s so much fun. With rides tailored from 2 miles, 10, 20, 40 or a 62 mile ride for expert bikers. It also demonstrates our community support for biking with its attendant health and quality of life benefits. And finally, it will greatly help our Town achieve the coveted gold status in the upcoming Bicycle Friendly Community re-application.
Santa, Mrs. Claus and their trusty reindeer Rudolph will help kick off the holiday season at the Town’s official Christmas Tree Lighting, an old-fashioned Yuletide celebration complete with Christmas carols, holiday crafts, yummy treats and a musical performance from the cast of "An American in Paris."
At the Holly Day Art Market you can start your holiday shopping early and support local artists who will be onsite with jewelry, art, crafts, Christmas treasures and more!
Activities for children include face painting, holiday crafts and photo opportunities with Santa. Hot chocolate, coffee, BBQ and other treats will be available to help keep patrons warm.
This family friendly community festival, held on the grounds of the Arts Center, is an Island tradition!
Have you checked out the current exhibit at Town Hall? It will be on display through March 1, 2019. Feel free to stop by Town Hall Monday - Friday from 8:30 - 3:30 PM to view the art by local artists.
A few pieces from the gallery have already sold. The first sale was "Shower of Stars" by Aubrey Zoodsma. When told her work was the first piece sold Aubrey replied, "This is one of my favorite photographs--I am absolutely thrilled that it was the first to sell! It is an honor to have my picture displayed here and I look forward to seeing other excellent shows in the future."
Consider purchasing a piece of art as a holiday gift. A uniquely Lowcountry gift idea.
Named Best Musical of the year by both the Drama League and the Outer Critics Circle and the winner of 4Tony Awards, An American in Paris is the hit new musical guaranteed to sweep you off your feet—and into the arms of a story you’ll never forget.
Inspired by the Academy Award-winning film and featuring the music of George and Ira Gershwin, An American in Paris is the story of World War II veteran Jerry Mulligan, who, hoping to build a new life, chooses newly-liberated Paris as the place to make a name for himself as a painter. But Jerry's life becomes complicated when he meets Lise, a young Parisian shop girl with her own secret - and realizes he is not her only suitor.
This stunning combination of classic music, timeless story and gorgeous dance results in the spectacular musical perfect for the whole family!
