Renton prepares for 2026 FIFA World Cup
Goal! With the 2026 World Cup coming to our region this summer, the city is making preparations for the many events, activities, and visitors expected during this major international event.
One way the city has been preparing is through a joint exercise between the Renton Police Department, Renton Regional Fire Authority, Renton Parks & Recreation, other city divisions, and a dedicated group of volunteers coordinated by Renton Emergency Management.
Together, we improved our emergency response procedures and strengthened coordination between city departments and partner agencies, helping us stay better prepared.

In addition to training efforts, construction for downtown’s Legacy Square is underway. Progress thus far includes:
-
Completion of the futsal court in partnership with the Sounders RAVE Foundation. The official logos will be painted on the court in spring 2026.
-
Underground utilities are complete. Work has shifted to hardscape improvements, including stairwells, driveways, sidewalks, and curbs and gutters.
-
Concrete for the play area benches has been poured.
-
All luminaire pole bases have been poured, with the futsal light poles scheduled for installation in early 2026.
-
The construction company for Phase 2 was recently approved by the Renton City Council. A grant from the State Department of Commerce will support the funding for this phase of the project. This portion of Phase 2 will be the installation of the stage.
Legacy Square will provide a space to watch World Cup 2026 matches live on the big screen and bring a new community space downtown with year-round activation.
The World Cup Final Draw will take place on December 5 which will decide the groups, match schedule, and spots for teams still in the playoffs.
For Renton, the draw will clarify whether a national team will train or stay in the city.
Do you represent a business and are unsure how to participate in this unique opportunity? Visit Renton has a dedicated page of resources and information for businesses to make the most out of this experience.
Celebrating Filipino American History Month
During Monday’s Renton City Council meeting, Mayor Armondo Pavone designated October as Filipino American History Month. To accept the proclamation was a member of the city's Planning Commission and Secretary of the Association of Filipino-American Engineers of Washington (AFEW), Josephine Bayan.
Bayan shared, “It's not easy at first coming to America as immigrants, but our constant pursuit of excellence, our resilience, and perseverance made us exemplary members of the workforce, not just additional members, [but] contributors to our community."
Filipino American History Month celebrates the contributions and history of Filipino Americans in the United States. The observance commemorates the arrival of the first Filipinos in modern-day California in October 1587. Originally established in 1992, the observance gained recognition by Congress in 2009.
You're invited! Community Paint Day at Sunset Hill Safeway
Join us Saturday, October 25 to help paint a new community mural at the Sunset Hill Safeway.
Designed by local artist Yi Du and inspired by a community garden, this mural is part of Renton’s Paint with Purpose program, transforming blank walls into vibrant works of art.
All skill levels are welcome, just wear paint-friendly clothes.
In case of rain, the event will move to Saturday, November 1.
This project is produced by Urban ArtWorks in collaboration with the city’s Community & Economic Development Department through the Paint with Purpose initiative.
Proposed truck reroute to include SR 900 and Rainier Avenue
The City of Tukwila has proposed an alternative trucking route (Alternative 6) to reduce the impacts of trucks in Tukwila’s Allentown neighborhood.
Renton residents are encouraged to participate in the public comment process, as this reroute could impact roads and nearby areas in Renton. Southbound trucks would likely access I-405 from Renton streets, including MLK Jr. Way South., SW Sunset Boulevard, and Rainier Avenue South.
The meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 28, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. at the Tukwila Community Center (12424 42nd Ave. S., Tukwila, WA 98168).
Currently, a paper copy of the draft document is also available at Renton Library (100 Mill Ave. S.).
