The City of Renton's Public Works Department's Shift Green Program recently received the Program Excellence Award from the North American Hazardous Materials Management Association (NAHMMA). This award recognizes the program as an example of Renton's commitment to addressing household hazardous waste in a safe, cost-saving, and environmentally friendly way.
NAHMMA evaluates programs based on their creative approaches to pollution prevention. Programs are selected based on their impact, community engagement, and waste management practices.
Shift Green has stood out in promoting responsible recycling of used motor oil and filters. Beginning in 2021, the city partnered with Renton auto businesses to offer residents an easy and sustainable way to recycle used motor oil and filters after oil changes.
Since its beginning, the program has successfully collected nearly 100,000 gallons of used motor oil and almost 8,000 used filters.
These achievements highlight the program's success in managing hazardous materials, curbing pollution, and educating proper disposal practices.
This award shows the city’s deep dedication to environmental stewardship, sustainable practices, and responsible waste management within Renton.
Northeast Renton Park Master Plan adopted
Last month, Renton City Council adopted the Northeast Renton Park Master Plan, providing a vision and roadmap for a new neighborhood park in Renton’s East Plateau community.
Located between the May Creek Greenway and Duvall Avenue NE, this future 18.5-acre park adds needed access of public open space in this part of the city.
The plan was heavily influenced by community feedback, focusing on conservation and active use of the existing land.
Forested areas, wetlands, streams, steep slopes, and some developed areas are all existing features of the land. This unique space will offer diverse opportunities for recreation and conservation, including play areas, trails and trailheads, gathering spaces, an off-leash dog area, and access to nature.
Additional efforts to conserve and steward the landscape will further support wildlife habitat and create educational and interpretive experiences for visitors.
Aligned with the city’s Parks, Recreation, and Natural Areas Plan, this new park also supports the goal of a public park within a ten-minute walk of every Renton resident. The newly adopted biennium budget includes funding to move forward with design, permitting, and construction.
