During the reception, several state representatives joined Mayor Armondo Pavone in speaking about the importance of urban forestry plans, including Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz and Representative Bill Ramos, who sponsored HB 2768, modernizing the Evergreen Communities Act. The reception, broadcast live on TVW, was followed by a “field trip” to Philip Arnold Park, serving as a great example of park planning and natural resource conservation.
The city’s participation in the Evergreen Communities Recognition Program re-affirms the commitment and importance of the city’s dedication to a high quality of life for our residents - a place to live, work, and play, while also being aware of our important role in long-term environmental health and sustainability.
“We place high importance on our urban forest management here in the city, and we view it truly as an essential public service, just like we manage and maintain our roads, parks, and other infrastructure,” said Mayor Armondo Pavone.
Maintaining and sustaining Renton’s urban forest not only impacts the city’s air quality and absorbs air pollutants, but urban areas with forests lower costs for heating and cooling for residents and provide better run-off outcomes during the rainy season.
Renton has been a “Tree City USA” since 2007. The city qualified for its 13th Growth Award in 2023. Becoming an “Evergreen Community” goes above and beyond the current Tree City USA requirements.
Through this partnership, the city will continue to protect and maintain its trees and increase quality of life for residents now, and for generations to come.

Salmon SEEson is here! See the salmon lifecycle in action
Salmon SEEson is an annual program hosted by the Lake Washington/Cedar/Sammamish Watershed (WRIA 8) Salmon Recovery Council. With support from the Seattle Aquarium, King County, and various local government and community organization partners throughout the King County watersheds, the program aims to guide communication and advocate for salmon recovery. One major aspect of Salmon SEEson is highlighting locations between August to October where the public can go see salmon return to rivers to spawn, learn about their impact on our region, and discover ways to help protect them.
With Renton’s unique access to the Cedar River and commitment to sustainable practices, the Parks & Recreation Department and the Public Works Department’s Sustainability and Solid Waste Division seek to help promote the Salmon SEEson program.
One part of Seattle Aquarium’s program, known as Cedar River Salmon Journey takes place in Renton every weekend in October. This is an opportunity for the public to witness the salmon’s journey upstream and learn about the key roles salmon play in our economy and our local ecosystem, which supports us all.
Visit the Renton Library, Cedar River Park, and Riverview Park here in the city every Saturday in October from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to talk with Seattle Aquarium naturalists and see the salmon’s journey in action.
This program serves as a great local educational opportunity and aligns with the city’s Parks and Recreation continual stepping stone towards the National Recreation and Park Association’s three pillars of health and well-being, equity, and environmental resilience.
