Each September is your annual reminder that being prepared for the unexpected can help keep yourself, loved ones, neighbors, and coworkers safe. September is Ready in Renton Month, an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time in the area. Renton is susceptible to the varying natural emergencies in the Pacific Northwest, from earthquakes, flooding, snow, extreme heat, public health emergencies, wildfires, and more.
You can be your community's emergency preparedness leader by being involved and proactive with your emergency planning.
STAY ALERT: ALERT Renton is a voluntary emergency notification system that allows the city to contact you immediately with critical emergency information through text messaging, phone calls, or email so that you can quickly take action for your safety. ALERT Renton is part of a county-wide notification system, so no matter where you are in the county, you will get notified. Register online at rentonwa.gov/alert.
GET INVOLVED: The Renton Emergency Preparedness Academy (REPA) is a partnership between the City of Renton, the Renton Regional Fire Authority, and Renton Technical College. It provides courses designed to help people be better equipped to face any type of emergency. Courses range from basic preparedness skills to basic cybersecurity skills. The next academy starts in November 2024. For more information, visit rentonwa.gov/repa.
PROVIDE INPUT: The city's Emergency Management Division is participating in revising the King County Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan and the Renton Annex. Renton residents' perspectives are essential to identifying the hazards that concern them most. By identifying and understanding the hazards that could affect the community, the city can prioritize strategies and projects that minimize their occurrence and result in negative impacts. Make a difference in reducing the damage and safety risks from these hazards by sharing concerns and potential solutions through this survey. Take the survey by September 19.
Help Renton become a safer community and join in the city's efforts to be ready in Renton.

Final Renton recycling event of 2024: Styrofoam collection & document shredding on September 14
Join the Public Works Department's Solid Waste & Sustainability Division's final free recycling event at Renton Technical College. Take this opportunity to properly recycle Styrofoam and documents for shredding to limit the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill.
Staff and volunteers will collect Styrofoam items, including Styrofoam peanuts, bubble wrap, clean white block Styrofoam, and up to five banker boxes or the equivalent in bags of documents for shredding.
Please ensure your documents are free of binders, plastics, or discs, and refrain from bringing ID badges, driver's licenses, cardboard, or hardcover books. Additionally, food donations will be accepted to support Renton neighbors needing food resources. Contribute non-perishable items at the event to aid our community.
As of 2024, through these community events, the city has helped prevent 740 lbs. of Styrofoam, 12 tons of scrap metal, 75 mattresses and box springs, 401 tires, and 75 pieces of furniture for refurbishing from ending up in the landfill. This is in addition to 373 lbs. of non-perishable foods collected for donation. Thank you to everyone for participating in the city's ongoing effort to prevent waste and implement eco-friendly practices through day-to-day actions.
Enhancing Maplewood Park playground: Transforming outdoor play with upgrades
On August 23, the city's Parks and Recreation Department attended a Maplewood Glen neighborhood summer gathering, marking an early opportunity to engage the community in shaping future upgrades to the Maplewood Park playground, scheduled for the spring/summer of 2025.
During their visit, they recorded participants’ ideas for a playground theme and desired elements within the playground and park as a whole. Additionally, staff facilitated an activity that allowed children and families to layout a playground design on a scaled site map, illustrating play equipment priorities while accounting for space required for both equipment and safety buffer zones.
For nearly twenty years, Maplewood Park has served children in the community, providing a place to be outside, have fun, and play. Due to the playground's active use, the park's aging equipment must be replaced. For this renovation project, the Parks and Recreation Department aims to prioritize safety, address the desires of park users, and support progressive skill development by providing a variety of play challenges suited to diverse age groups and abilities.
