The City of Renton is excited to announce that applications are now open for the 2025 Tourism Promotion Grants. These grants support innovative events that showcase Renton's unique charm and drive tourism to the city.
Nonprofit organizations with creative ideas for events or initiatives to attract visitors to Renton are encouraged to apply. Event locations do not need to be within Renton's city limits, but they should contribute to enhancing tourism in the city. Organizations can apply for funding for multiple events, though capital expenditures are not eligible for grant funding.
The Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC), appointed by the mayor and comprised of seasoned advisors, will review all applications. LTAC will recommend funding proposals to the Renton City Council, which will make the final funding decisions.
LTAC prioritizes innovative projects that offer a fresh perspective and attract diverse audiences. When seeking projects for approval, an emphasis on attractions such as multi-day events, sports activities, and initiatives that promote diversity and inclusivity is needed. Projects with a history of drawing overnight visitors and supporting the lodging tax fund are particularly valued.

Unleash your superpowers at Renton's annual Superhero 5K fun run/walk
It's a bird, it's a plane, no, it is just Renton's annual Superhero 5K. For the second year, the city's Parks and Recreation Department is hosting this action-packed run and walk event on Friday, September 13.
The race begins at 6 p.m. in front of Henry Moses Aquatic Center (1719 Maple Valley Hwy), with a pre-race warm-up and photo op at 5:50 p.m. Come dressed as an iconic heroic figure and charge your superpowers for an eventful day.
This fun run/walk is a timed 5K course that begins at Renton Community Center, goes east along the Cedar River Trail, turns around at Riverview Park, and then heads back to Renton Community Center. The Cedar River Trail is fully paved and flat.
For grown-up superheroes, the event is $30 and $20 for super sidekicks (ages 17 and under) to register. A keepsake medal & superhero cape are included with registration fees. Register online before spots fill up.
Results will be available after participants cross the finish line and will be posted on the website the week after the race.
First day of school safety reminders from Renton School District and Renton Police Department
Happy first day of school Renton! With school starting for most students in the Renton School District on Wednesday, August 28, it is crucial to be aware of the reduced traffic speeds in school zones. When students are present and yellow beacon lights are flashing, the speed limit in school zones is 20 MPH.
It's important to note that some school zones in Renton also have speed cameras managed by the City of Renton, with speeding violations resulting in tickets ranging from $124 to $250.
Driving cautiously around schools is imperative, as many students walk or ride bikes to school. Please exercise caution, especially when driving near school bus stops where students are present.
Additionally, it is essential to remember the rules when it comes to school buses:
-
On a two-lane road, stop in both directions.
-
If there is a turning lane in the middle, stop if traveling in the same direction as the bus.
-
If there are three or more lanes, stop if traveling in the same direction as the bus.
-
If there's a median, stop if traveling in the same direction as the bus.
Failure to stop when a school bus bar is out can result in a $500 fine.
Being mindful of these guidelines and practicing safe driving habits around schools will help ensure the safety of students as they commute to and from school.
