The city's Public Works and Community and Economic Development Departments have been diligently enhancing the streets and sidewalks of downtown blocks since 2017 as part of a multi-faceted initiative to uplift the urban landscape. This comprehensive effort, known as "streetscapes," aims to elevate the visual appeal, safety, and overall pedestrian experience within public rights-of-way.
As of July 15, upgrades to the 200 block of Williams Avenue South Second and Third were completed. As part of the upgrades, the block received new sidewalks and driveway aprons, replaced 12 street trees adding seasonal variety, replanted six existing trees in other portions of downtown, new litter receptacles and 12 new pedestrian-scale streetlights outfitted with street banners, flower baskets and irrigation.
Thanks to the Renton Municipal Arts Commission and the Cugini Family, a piece of Renton's history was added to the project. Installed on Williams Avenue South, a restored 1960s streetlight marks the corner as it once did over 60 years ago. Through the expert craftsmanship of Western Neon Seattle, it transformed into a mesmerizing piece of functional art.
The functional art piece's ribbon cutting will be held this Thursday, August 1, at 11 a.m. on Williams Avenue South (corner of South Third and Williams).
Thanks to business owners, residents, and visitors for your patience during these upgrades.

The Surface Water Utility public comment period is now open for the 2024 Stormwater Management Plan
The Surface Water Utility Division is currently accepting public comments on the city’s draft revisions to the 2024 Stormwater Management Program Plan until August 7. These revisions are crucial to accommodate the additional requirements of the new Western Washington 2024-2029 NPDES Phase II Municipal Stormwater Permit, which will take effect starting August 1.

Public comment period: Speed limit reduction on 140th Avenue SE
King County Road Services is proposing a speed limit reduction on 140th Avenue SE to enhance safety and consistency for drivers. The proposed change, from 40 mph to 35 mph between Renton city limits and SE 192nd Street, aligns with existing speed limits, providing a uniform driving experience along this route. Visit the Speed Limit Assessment Project website to understand this initiative better.
Community members are encouraged to participate in the 14-day public comment period from July 23 to August 6 to voice their opinions on this proposal.
