Celebrating African American freedom and cultural heritage: Juneteenth 2024 in Renton
Juneteenth commemorates the historical significance of President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, and the enduring resilience of enslaved individuals, particularly in Texas, who awaited liberation until June 19, 1865.
Despite over 156 years passing since the official end of chattel slavery, our dedication to eradicating discriminatory systems and ensuring justice for all remains resolute. The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act was officially enacted in June 2021, establishing the day as a federal holiday.
On Monday evening, Mayor Armondo Pavone officially designated June 19 as Juneteenth in Renton. Danielle Smith, Renton Chamber of Commerce Board Chair and Café de la Loba business owner, accepted the proclamation.
“It was Saturday, June 19, 2021, when we joined the city's Juneteenth celebration at the Renton Chamber of Commerce. As a business owner, what I saw was community gathered together uplifting African American art, culture, and community. That is when I knew this is where I wanted to plant my roots. Now here we are, three years later, and honestly, I don't think I could imagine this moment in my wildest dreams, and yet I find it fitting. I am grateful that Renton is the place that nurtured me and grew me up as a leader, and I am thankful that this community has guided me toward servant leadership and allowed me to help shape our community to be more equitable and inclusive. Moreover, I think of the legacy that I am a part of in my own family. I think about my grandparents and other loved ones who have passed on, but if they were here to witness this moment, how proud they would be of me right now.” - Dani Smith.
Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and cultural heritage, and is also as a time for unity, reflection, and the promotion of inclusivity.
We encourage everyone to take the time to both celebrate and educate themselves on the significance of Juneteenth and what it signifies for the future.
