If the body is composed of 98% water, nothing could be more important than the quality of our local water supply. The recently released Renton Water Quality Report for 2023/2024 offers valuable insights into the city's drinking water quality and safety, along with a look into how deeply Renton is committed to proactively staying ahead of emerging contaminants.
Renton is one of few cities that obtain drinking water from wells within city limits, and most of Renton's drinking water does not rely on Seattle Public Utilities (SPU). The four sources include six downtown wells in Liberty and Cedar River Parks, drawing water from the Cedar Valley Aquifer, Springbrook Springs, Maplewood wellfield under the Maplewood Golf Course, and a small purchase agreement with SPU primarily used for the Renton Boeing plant and as a backup supply during summer peak use periods.
The extensive testing and rigorous evaluation of Renton's water supply completed by the city's Public Works Department ensures the security of the water supply for all residents.
See the numbers in action through the 2023 Renton Water Statistics:
-
2,754,296,000 gallons were produced by the City of Renton from nine wells and one spring
-
318 miles of water main are in service
-
17,901 total metered connections are served
-
7,546,016 gallons are produced on an average day
-
12,380,000 gallons were produced on the highest demand day: August 1, 2023
-
5,139,000 gallons were produced on the lowest demand day: December 26, 2023
The Renton Water Quality Report for 2023/2024 provides crucial information about the city's drinking water and shines a spotlight on the water utility's dedication to proactive monitoring, mitigation, and compliance with evolving regulations. It is a testament to Renton's commitment to providing high-quality and safe drinking water as a top priority.

Final rules implemented for Renton Municipal Code 5.28 on Labor Standards
The city has been working through the rule-making process since the initiative’s February 23, 2024, election certification date. Public feedback on the draft rules was requested on May 7, 2024, and the rules were finalized on May 31, 2024.
These rules implement the citizen-led Initiative Measure 23-02, which voters approved in February 2023. The measure is codified within Chapter 5-28 and Section 5-5-4 of the Renton Municipal Code (collectively, "the Ordinance"). The rules can be found below and are available in six languages on the city website. The final rules include:
1. Establishment of Minimum Wage Rates: The city’s Finance Department will establish and publish the applicable hourly minimum wage rate for the following year by October 15 of each year on its website, file a copy with the City Clerk, and notify the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries.
2. Employer Certification of Compliance: Employers are required to certify compliance with the Ordinance at the time of submitting their annual Renton business license renewal application. Failure to certify compliance may result in denial or revocation of an employer’s business license.
Help shape Renton 2025-2026 city budget
The City of Renton's Finance Department has begun building the biennial budget for 2025 and 2026. As part of this process, the city is conducting a community-wide budget survey with the help of independent researchers.
Through this process, the city will gain insights and feedback from residents on the direction and spending plan of the city for the upcoming two years. Thus far, many households have been directly contacted through mailed postcards, text messages, and emails with a link and unique ID to complete the survey.
In the online survey, participants can share their opinions on a variety of topics, including:
-
Priority outcomes for the city budget
-
Importance and satisfaction ratings for city facilities
-
Transportation and safety initiatives
-
Overall perception of life in Renton
Input from community members is critical to understanding the city’s current state and future needs.
Please consider participating in this important civic process. If your household was not directly contacted, the survey will be available for the public starting June 12 at rentonwa.gov/budget.
