Last year, the department's strategic allocation of funds resulted in purchasing a city-owned paver. This valuable asset helps them to efficiently repair significant road sections without outsourcing to private contractors. By conducting repairs in-house, the department can utilize those saved funds toward other city projects and can address potholes requests from residents quicker.
During the dryer months between April and September, crews work on permanent pothole repairs. This proactive approach eliminates the need for lengthy contractor hiring processes, ensuring immediate and sustainable maintenance. As a result, Renton is recognized as a "pothole-free city."
While the paver is a crucial tool the Street Maintenance Division uses, the department's work extends beyond pothole repairs. With six divisions, each contributing unique skills and services, the overall mission of the Public Works Department is to cultivate Renton as a thriving and vibrant community for all its residents.

The Facilities Division is responsible for maintaining and cleaning city buildings, such as park restrooms, Renton Community Center, Don Persson Renton Senior Activity Center, Highlands Community Center, and North Highlands Community Center.
The Maintenance Division manages the maintenance of over 753 miles of roadway, 318 miles of water mains, 233 miles of sanitary sewer collection systems, and 290 miles of stormwater conveyance systems. Additionally, it oversees various services like utility locations, water leak repairs, preventative flood maintenance, sewer main preservation, solid waste management, and vehicle and equipment maintenance.
The Renton Municipal Airport is a unique addition to the city living within the Public Works Department. Renton Municipal Airport is the only airport in the region with land and water-based runways, including a 5,382-foot runway used by Boeing 737 aircraft. They are within the region's top 10 operations (including take-off and landing) and will see about 120,000 flights annually.
In partnership with Republic Services, Sustainability and Solid Waste manages recycling programs, special recycling events, Clean Sweep initiatives, and solid waste collections. It also promotes waste reduction and environmental conservation through the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink program.
The Transportation Division plans, designs, constructs, operates and maintains the city's transportation infrastructure, covering streets, sidewalks, bridges, traffic signals, streetlights, traffic signs, and street striping.
The Utility Systems Division plans, designs, constructs, operates and maintains the city's utility infrastructure to ensure safe drinking water, wastewater removal, flood hazard reduction, public health protection, and environmental compliance. Additionally, they oversee water, wastewater, and surface water customer accounts, developer projects, and GIS mapping.

Community education opportunity on House Bill 1110/middle housing: Attend the virtual open house on June 1
The Washington State Legislature passed House Bill 1110 (HB 1110) in April 2023, to promote the development of middle housing. The new middle housing legislation will increase the housing inventory and create more housing choices in areas historically zoned for single-family construction. Along with middle housing, single-family detached homes will continue to be allowed.
The City of Renton’s Community and Economic Development Department aims to provide various opportunities for residents to learn about HB1110/middle housing.
Attend the virtual open house on Saturday, June 1, at 10 a.m. During the open house, Community and Economic Development Department staff will provide information on the bill and address questions and opportunities to get involved.
Middle housing refers to housing types similar in size, shape, and style to single-family houses. These housing types contain two or more homes that are attached, stacked, or clustered together. Examples of middle housing include duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, five-plexes, six-plexes, townhouses, stacked flats, courtyard apartments, and cottage housing.
The City of Renton must update its residential development regulations by June 30, 2025.
Experience the vibrant Renton Farmers Market: Opening day June 4
In just two weeks, Piazza Park will transform into a vibrant space for the community. Starting June 4, the City of Renton’s Parks and Recreation Department will produce the annual Renton Farmers Market. Taking over every Tuesday, the market offers an enticing blend of fresh produce, various food options, lively music and artisan crafts.
Celebrate the 23rd annual opening day of the Renton Farmers Market.
During opening day, remarks from Mayor Armondo Pavone will be held in addition to the official ringing in the market. Biff Moss will perform at 3:30 p.m., plus the WSU Master Gardeners will be present to guide and inspire your own gardening endeavors.
Last year, the Parks and Recreation Departments’ Renton Farmers Market welcomed nearly 40,000 visitors and facilitated $620,000 in vendor sales for local farmers and small businesses. Market supporters directly contribute to the community's and local farmers' economic sustainability.
Renton's City Center Parking Garage is free and conveniently accessible from Second Street.
The Renton Farmers Market will occur every Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m., starting June 4 and continuing until September 24. Join the Renton Farmers Market at Piazza Park, located at South Third and Logan, and get ready to savor the flavors and experience the lively atmosphere.
Memorial Day annual celebration and observance next Monday
Join Frank R. Vaise VFW Post #1263, Fred Hancock American Legion Post #19, and the City of Renton’s Parks and Recreation Department at the annual Memorial Day celebration to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives to serve the country.
The event will occur on Monday, May 27, from 1-2 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park (1000 S. Third St.).
A reminder, all city facilities will be closed on May 27 in observance of Memorial Day.
