Ever wonder how a new park is created? The city’s Parks Planning and Natural Resources Division is developing a master plan for a new neighborhood park in Renton’s East Plateau area. Tucked between the May Creek Greenway and Duvall Avenue NE, this new park will span approximately 18.5 acres, addressing a critical need in this part of the city.
The Northeast Renton Park Master Plan will create a vision and define the roadmap for developing a new neighborhood park that best serves the local community. This new park location offers a unique blend of landscapes—forests, wetlands and streams, steep slopes, and previously developed parcels, which provide diverse opportunities for active and passive recreational activities, such as:
-
Play areas and sport courts
-
Trails and trailheads
-
Gathering spaces
- Access to nature
A new park in this location aligns with a general recommendation of the city’s broader Parks, Recreation, and Natural Areas Plan, which includes an established goal of having a public park within a ten-minute walk (half-mile walking distance) of every Renton resident.
While the new park will target the needs of the East Plateau community, we know it will serve a much larger area.
Renton residents are invited to share ideas, learn more about the project, and get involved. Stay connected through the project's webpage with upcoming engagement opportunities.
Celebrating Black History Month in Renton
On Monday evening, the city celebrated Black History Month with a reception for community leaders at Renton City Hall before the City Council meeting. The reception reflected this year's theme of "African Americans and the Arts," with displays from various local Black artists ranging in art styles, from canvas paintings to glass blowing and ceramics.
This theme recognizes and celebrates the significant contributions of African Americans to various art forms, from visual and performing arts to literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, and culinary arts.
After the reception during the council meeting, Mayor Pavone issued a proclamation designating Black History Month in Renton. The city's own Council President, Ed Prince, accepted the proclamation.
“As someone who stands on the shoulders of giants, Black History Month has always been important to me because Black History is American history, and the thing that history teaches us is that we are always on a constant path towards progress,” said Council President Ed Prince.
2024 marks the first time the Renton City Council has an African American Council President, Ed Prince, and President Pro-Tem, James Alberson, Jr.
