The coolest way to start the New Year: Join us for the 2024 Lake Washington Polar Bear Plunge!
Since 2008, hundreds of brave people have gathered at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park to take a plunge in the icy waters of Lake Washington to ring in the New Year.
This free event starts promptly at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 1, at the South Beach of Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park at 1201 Lake Washington Blvd N.
Remember to bring a towel and dry set of clothes. Clam chowder, hot coffee, and hot chocolate will be provided after the plunge, courtesy of Ivar’s and Starbucks.
We thank the City’s Parks and Recreation staff, the Renton Regional Fire Authority, and the city’s lifeguards for supporting the well-being of all participants during this frosty annual tradition!
Let’s Go Renton! Recreation Guide registration is now available
Registration for all recreational programs and events from January through April 2024 is now open.
The new year will bring familiar and new recreational programming and events for all ages in the winter edition of the Let’s Go Renton! Recreation Guide.

Public feedback opportunity: Disaster planning and community safety in Renton's Annex Hazard Mitigation Plan
The City of Renton invites the public to comment on the Renton Annex to the King County Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. This plan outlines hazards the city has prepared for within city limits.
The strategies and projects proposed serve to reduce the occurrence or negative impacts of those hazards on our community.
The feedback received on the Renton Annex will be an essential part of significant 2024 revisions to the King County Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan as part of its five-year update cycle. Of the hazard risks and vulnerabilities the City of Renton could face, eight are described in this plan, including:
- Dam Failure
- Earthquake
- Flood
- Landslide/Sinkholes
- Severe Weather
- Severe Winter Weather
- Volcano
-
Wildfire
The expanded revision will consider more natural, technological, and human-caused disasters that aren’t currently addressed. Based on public feedback, existing projects will be re-evaluated, and new projects will be considered to reduce disaster threats or damages.
