November is a time to gather, share thanks, and support the community. Now, through the end of the year, the city will host several seasonal events adored by many. When thinking of ways to give back to the community and support one another, consider these upcoming opportunities:
Holiday Bazaar & Food Drive: Support small businesses at the Holiday Bazaar on November 17 and 18 at Renton Community Center. In addition, there will be a food drive held during the event, so be sure to bring any non-perishable food items for donation to local food banks.
Giving Tuesday/Gift of Play: Giving Tuesday is an annual campaign to create a movement of generosity. It is celebrated worldwide on Tuesday, November 28, encouraging people to do good. Contribute to the Gift of Play on Giving Tuesday. The Gift of Play is Renton’s Parks and Recreation Department’s scholarship program to make recreation activities attainable for low-income youth, older adults, and adaptive recreation participants.
Volunteer: Volunteering is a great alternative way to give if monetary donations are not an option. There are a few local opportunities to participate in:
Update: Road safety focus continues with Lind Avenue Bridge repairs
WSDOT has started preparations for the bridge replacement project on the I-405 Lind Avenue overpass.
Starting Friday, November 3, at 11 p.m. through Monday, November 6, until 4:30 a.m., southbound I-405 will close 24 hours a day so crews can demolish the damaged section of the bridge. The detour is via Talbot Road and Grady Way.
Once this portion of the project is complete, there will be one final full closure to place girders for the new overpass, and lane reductions will reduce the effects on people who rely on I-405.
The bridge has been closed since it was damaged in June 2022 by a truck pulling a backhoe. The repairs will include the replacement of the entire north span and a portion of the south span, and will be complete in winter 2024.
