Save the date for a spooky good time: Renton’s annual Truck or Treat Halloween Drive Thru this week
Spooky, sweet, with all the treats. Join city staff at Renton Community Center, 1715 Maple Valley Highway, for the city's annual Truck or Treat Halloween Drive Thru this upcoming Friday, October 20.
What started as a way to bring the community together safely and offer an alternative way to trick-or-treat during the pandemic has become a well-loved and attended annual event.
For those with varying sensory needs, there will be a timeslot from 5-5:45 p.m. with reduced noise and flashing lights. The main event will kick off at 6 p.m., with the last timeslot available at 7:30 p.m.
Each vehicle will collect plenty of treats and a few tricks. Staff will be working to make this the best possible experience for all, but ask for patience while waiting in line and for all attendees to remain in their vehicles for the entirety of the event. Emails will be sent to the primary registrant with event details the week of October 16.
Come ready in costume and practice the best way to say “trick-or-treat!” Register online using the keyword 'treat.'

2024 Tourism Promotion Grant applications are due this Friday
Non-profit organizations with creative vision for events or initiatives attracting visitors to Renton are encouraged to apply. Event locations are not limited to Renton's city limits, but they should undeniably contribute to boosting tourism within the city. Organizations can seek funding for multiple events. Capital expenditures are not eligible for grant funding.
The Lodging Tax Advisory Committee (LTAC) comprises experienced advisors and meticulously evaluates all applications. They make funding recommendations to the Renton City Council, which makes the final decision.
LTAC members are looking to recommend funding for innovative projects that bring a fresh perspective and attract diverse audiences. Priority goes to multi-day events, sports activities, and initiatives championing diversity and inclusivity. Projects with a proven record of drawing overnight visitors will receive priority.
Finalists will present proposals to LTAC on Thursday, November 9. Funded projects will be announced in December.
Interested parties can find the application and further information online. Tourism Promotion Grants funding comes from Washington state's Hotel-Motel Tax, derived from in-city lodging stays lasting fewer than 30 days.
One day until ShakeOut Day!
This year’s International ShakeOut Day is October 19. At 10:19 a.m. (local time) on Thursday, October 19, millions worldwide, including Renton, will participate in earthquake drills at work, school, or home.
This will help residents prepare for an earthquake. During the drill, practice the ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold On’ training, or put some thought and planning into other earthquake preparations, including securing furniture to keep it from falling, building a communications plan with friends and family, connecting with colleagues on a work plan in case you are unable to get to or from work.
While earthquake hazard varies from region to region, most of Washington is prone to earthquakes, and everyone is encouraged to participate to help best prepare before an actual earthquake. Register online on the ShakeOut website.
ShakeOut day is also a great time to practice tsunami evacuation routes. Learn more about tsunami preparedness.
Another way to stay up-to-date with emergencies in Renton is to sign up for ALERT Renton. ALERT Renton is a free and secure voluntary emergency notification system that allows the city to send critical emergency information via phone, TDD, text, or email.

Sound Transit seeks public input on Sounder operating hours
As part of the Sounder South Strategic Plan, Sound Transit has opened a survey to the public through October 29 to help inform Sound Transit priorities, such as potential new trips.
The Sounder South Strategic Plan, created in early 2020, prioritized commuters using Sound Transit's Sounder S Line train. Currently, the S Line runs thirteen round-trip trains every weekday as a dependable, traffic-free trip between Seattle, Tacoma, and Lakewood, with stops in Puyallup, Sumner, Auburn, Kent, and Tukwila.
Since then, travel patterns have changed with the increase of hybrid and remote work; the survey will ask whether riders prefer new trips on weekends, evenings, or midday, rather than longer trains with more capacity, and will help inform adjustments to the plan.
Take the survey and be entered to win two tickets to the November 12 Seahawks game vs. the Washington Commanders, a $100 gift card (five available), or Sound Transit swag bags (10 available).
The survey can be found online and is available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, Somali, Russian, and Ukrainian.
