Over the past few years, several street intersection projects have successfully implemented streetscape improvements at key locations, including 2nd, 3rd, and Houser at Williams, Wells and Main. These initiatives aim to enhance the downtown core's appearance, safety, and overall pedestrian experience.
Various elements of this upcoming project are:
- Replacement of all sidewalks and driveway aprons
- Removal of twelve existing street trees and replacement with fourteen new trees to provide seasonal variety
- Replanting of six street trees on nearby streets
- Installation of new litter receptacles, tree grates, and landscape strips with decorative fencing
- Removal of six tall streetlights and installation of twelve pedestrian-scale streetlights with additional features such as street banners, flower baskets, irrigation for baskets, and holiday lighting
-
Repaving and restriping the street's driving and parking lanes
These streetscape improvements aim to enhance the vibrancy and attractiveness of the downtown area while ensuring the safety and comfort of pedestrians and motorists. The city appreciates everyone's patience during construction and urges residents and commuters to support local businesses during this exciting transformation.
Renton’s CES 2.0 Plan public comment closes today
The world is already facing more frequent and severe weather because of climate change. The Pacific Northwest, including Renton, is experiencing more episodes of wildfire smoke, warmer temperatures, and more variable precipitation.
The Clean Economy Strategy update (“CES 2.0”) is a roadmap of local policies to reduce Renton’s greenhouse gas emissions, enhance environmental sustainability, and prepare for climate change.
Implementing the strategies and actions within the CES 2.0 will support the creation of local green jobs, public health benefits, safer walking and biking routes, more accessible transit, long-term energy cost savings, and more robust emergency management systems.
Success is based on collaboration across the Renton community. Those who live, work, and study here are crucial in helping shape the plan of the city.
The draft plan is uploaded and available for review, and the public comment period will remain open through October 4.
In addition, the public can attend the Planning Commission briefing and public hearing on October 4, from 6-8 p.m. (in person or via Zoom) or send public comment to kbuchl-morales@rentonwa.gov.
Background information on CES 2.0, including a complete project timeline and additional opportunities for community member involvement, can be found on the project’s website.

Mayor Armondo Pavone presents the Domestic Violence Awareness Month proclamation to Tina Harris, Renton Police Department’s Domestic Violence Victim Advocate.
Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Renton
Mayor Armondo Pavone proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Renton during Monday night’s council meeting. Renton Police Department's Domestic Violence Victim Advocate, Tina Harris, accepted the proclamation.
Domestic violence is a public safety concern and impacts the community emotionally, physically, and financially. In April, the city adopted a new Renton Municipal Code to help prevent children from being exposed to domestic violence.
In Renton, we are working to stop the cycle of domestic violence through our Domestic Violence Victim Advocate. The advocate is available Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the second floor of City Hall or by calling 425-430-6654. The advocate can provide the victim(s) with the following support:
-
Safety planning and problem-solving
-
Domestic violence prevention and education
-
Protection orders
-
Emergency short-term hotel shelter
-
Food and clothing
-
Transportation
-
Interpreter services
The cherry trees outside of City Hall display purple lights to symbolize the community offering support and resources, plus honoring and remembering those who have lost their lives to domestic violence. In addition, purple ribbons will be worn by Renton police officers and on police vehicles. The community is encouraged to wear purple ribbons to show awareness and support for those involved in domestic violence.

Snowplows roam the streets during the city's annual winter prep
The Public Works Street Maintenance Division started its winter prep on Monday. Prep will continue throughout the week, including dry runs of sanders and snowplows, testing weather and GPS tracking technologies, and providing staff with an overview of shift changes, routes, and overall process when snow or ice hits Renton’s roads.
The team uses equipment and resources including:
-
Nine sanders
-
Eleven trucks with plows
-
Three anti-icer applicator trucks
Winter weather can be unpredictable, and beginning the preparation processes now allows for crews to be well-equipped and prepared prior to any snow or ice.
Our crews take their duties very seriously, and these preparations help ensure they can keep first responders and residents safe. Thanks to staff for their dedication and commitment to the people of Renton.
