Proclamation: National Gun Violence Awareness Day
On or around June 4 each year, Moms Demand Action for Gun Safety in America asks that we wear orange in honor of all victims and survivors of gun violence.
Friends of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton chose orange, the dominant color hunters wear so other hunters can see them.
Hadiya was shot in the back and killed while standing with friends at a park in January 2013. One week earlier, she performed at President Barack Obama's second inauguration.
Mayor Pavone has proclaimed June 2 National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Renton. He urges everyone to wear orange to show their support.
Mayor Pavone presents the National Public Works Week proclamation to city public works administrator Martin Pastucha.
Proclamation: National Public Works Week
May 21-27 is National Public Works Week in Renton. Last week's newsletter highlighted the public works department's divisions and their daily impact on our residents' lives.
National Public Works Week is the perfect time to spotlight the many ways these talented and dedicated professionals work to make Renton a first-class city. From preventive maintenance to fiscal responsibility, they constantly put the need of our residents first. Here are two prime examples:
Road construction project at Hardie Avenue SW.
Preventative pothole maintenance
The scourge of drivers and vehicles, our streets maintenance division is committed to providing smooth, pothole-free roadways. One of their strategies is repairing roads before potholes form. This week, they’re working on one of their more extensive projects, repairing Hardie Avenue SW where it meets Martin Luther King Jr. Way. In one day, they applied just short of 210 tons of asphalt. A typical day sees them use between 80 and 100 tons.
In 2022, streets maintenance crews temporarily repaired just under 500 potholes within 24 hours of their reporting. When weather conditions don’t allow for a full repair, temporary fixes are applied. Crews return during the spring and summer to make permanent repairs.
When winter weather hits, these same crews switch gears to ensure safe streets by applying anti-icer and plowing our streets.
You can help by reporting potholes or road damage via Renton Responds. Also, please remember to slow down when passing through work zones.
 Rolling Hills reservoir.
Fiscal responsibility
When bids from contractors to repaint ground-level water reservoir tanks at Rolling Hills, South Talbot, and Mount Olivet topped $600,000 for each site, water maintenance crews decided to do the work themselves. As a result, not only do the reservoirs have a fresh look, the total cost for all three was approximately $60,000.
These are just two of many examples of the pride and dedication public works employees have for their jobs.
