Downtown Renton Construction: S 3rd St to be closed during the day from Burnett Ave S to Main Ave S for paving

DT Construction Header

Hi everyone,

ACCESS DOWNTOWN – PLEASE PLAN AHEAD FOR DETOURS

  • Starting as early as next week we plan to:
    • Close S 3rd St during the day from Burnett Ave S to Main Ave S for paving. The intersections at Wells Ave S and Williams Ave S will still be open to north and southbound through traffic, respectively. Paving is highly weather dependent, but we currently plan to pave for two days the week of October 11.
    • Reduce S 2nd St to the 2 lanes north of the center island between Morris Ave S and Shattuck Ave S during the day. The south two lanes of S 2nd St to and from Morris Ave S, Whitworth Ave S, and Shattuck Ave S will be restricted to local access only.
  • Access to Wells Ave S and Williams Ave S north of S 2nd St can be accessed via the detour routes shown below until we pave S 2nd St.
  • Portions of S 3rd St may also be temporarily closed as stormwater work continues through mid-October.
  • DUIP Detour map

Please follow detour and business access signage. Park for free at the City Center Parking Garage on S 2nd St.

CURRENT CONSTRUCTION IN DOWNTOWN RENTON

Work zones

1. Rebuilding the northside intersections on S 2nd St at Williams Ave S and Wells Ave S

We are continuing to rebuild the northside intersections on S 2nd St at Williams Ave S and Wells Ave S. Two-way cul-de-sacs will continue to be in place to maintain local access to homes and businesses leading up to the intersection closure.

Concrete pours are weather dependent and may be rescheduled. Concrete plants are also currently experiencing high demand regionally, which can intensify any weather-related delays.

Crews use hand tools to smooth out the top layer of a concrete panel.

As soon as crews finish pouring a concrete panel, hand tools are used to smooth the top layer of concrete before it begins to harden and cure.

2. Plan ahead for S 3rd St closure for pavement work

We plan to close S 3rd St during the day from Burnett Ave S to Main Ave S for paving.

Paving is highly weather dependent, but we currently plan to pave for two days the week of October 11. As the saying goes, oil and water don’t mix. If the ground is too wet from a previous night of rain, paving will be rescheduled to a later date where there are better conditions for the asphalt’s adhesive to bind correctly to the ground.

While we repave S 3rd St, you can anticipate:

Daytime closure | We plan to close S 3rd St from Burnett Ave S to Main Ave S during the daytime while we pave.

Northbound & southbound access | The intersections at Wells Ave S and Williams Ave S will still be open to north and southbound through traffic.

icon - parking

No parking | We’ll be paving the full width of the road, so please follow no parking signs to avoid being towed. Free parking at the City Center Parking Garage.

Sidewalk access | We plan to maintain sidewalk access.

icon - noise

Noise and vibrations | We’ll do our best to minimize noise.

Why a full closure?

  • Increase safety for you and our crews. It’s too narrow at the bulb outs to safely pave one side of the street at a time and maintain through traffic. Not only do we want to avoid potential driver-construction conflicts, but we’ll also be working with asphalt that’s heated to around 300 degrees, which is dangerous for both people and vehicles.
  • Reduce the risk of weather driven delays as it continues to get colder and wetter, so we can complete the work as quickly as possible.

3. Stormwater work on S 3rd St

Stormwater utility installation on S 3rd St continues moving east between Shattuck Ave S and Smithers Ave S and is anticipated to be completed next week.

A travel lane will be maintained on either the north or south side of the street. Daytime intersection closures at Morris Ave S and Smithers Ave S may be necessary, in which case a detour to Shattuck Ave S and S 4th St will be in place. Street parking will be affected; alternate parking is available in the City Center Parking Garage.

4. Utility and sidewalk work on Houser Way S

We’re continuing to remove and install new curb and gutter on Houser Way S at Williams Ave S and Wells Ave S.

We plan to start water utility work next week near the Williams Ave S intersection.

Expect traffic on Wells Ave S and Williams Ave S to be reduced to one lane at Houser Way S throughout the project.

When we’re not actively working at a corner, we’ll install temporary asphalt and cones to maintain pedestrian access.

5. Sewer and Stormwater utility work on Whitworth Ave S

Work continues with sewer utility improvements on Whitworth Ave S between S 2nd and S 3rd streets and is anticipated to be completed early next week.

After completion of the stormwater utility installation on S 3rd St, construction crews will shift to the stormwater utility work on Whitworth Ave S. This work is expected to continue into November.

6. Sewer on S 2nd St

Starting next week, construction will begin on the sewer main in S 2nd St and move west, ultimately all the way to Rainier Ave S. This work is anticipated to last through the month of November. Access to and from S 2nd St will be limited at Morris Ave S, Whitworth Ave S, and Shattuck Ave S.

While work is occurring on S 2nd St between Morris Ave S and Shattuck Ave S, the two lanes north of the center island will remain open to traffic, while the two lanes south of the center island will be closed. Access to and from Morris Ave S and Shattuck Ave S will be set up through the intersections from north of the center island. Follow posted signage and flaggers for access.

Due to the lack of a traffic signal at the intersection of Whitworth Ave S and S 2nd St, access to and from Whitworth Ave S at S 2nd St will be closed overnight. Drivers will need to access Whitworth Ave S from S 3rd St, as shown on the map. During construction hours, access may be allowed, when it is safe to do so, with flagger assistance. Please follow the instructions from flaggers for safe passage through the intersection.

Whitworth Ave S will be closed at S 2nd St at night and will need to be accessed from 3rd Street.

Whitworth Ave S will be closed at S 2nd St at night and will need to be accessed from 3rd Street.
