***Item number 2 has been revised***

Hi everyone,

There’s a few more chances to visit the Renton Farmers Market on Tuesdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. before its last day of the season on September 28. While you’re in downtown Renton visiting the Farmers Market, remember to stop by and shop at the local shops that are there year-around.

Have a question or comment about one of the construction projects downtown? Drop in to one of our virtual office hours, every other Friday from 1-1:30 p.m. Join us this Friday, September 10.

ACCESS DOWNTOWN

Please plan ahead for detours as we rebuild the northside of intersections on S 2nd St at Williams Ave S and Wells Ave S.

Please follow posted signs and directions from flaggers for safe access.

Stormwater work may continue to close the intersection of S 3rd St and Shattuck Ave S during the daytime into early next week. Once complete, ongoing work between Shattuck Ave S and Morris Ave S should allow a travel lane on the south side of S 3rd St. However, daytime intersection closures at Morris Ave S and Whitworth Ave S may be necessary, in which case we will detour traffic to Shattuck Ave S and S 4th St to reach access points east of the closure. Please follow signs for local business access routes.

CURRENT CONSTRUCTION IN DOWNTOWN RENTON

Downtown Project Map

1. Rebuilding the northside intersections on S 2nd St at Williams Ave S and Wells Ave S

We are continuing our intersection work on the northside of S 2nd St at Williams Ave S and Wells Ave S. So far, we’ve removed the old concrete and made utility connections where necessary. As early as Monday, September 13, our concrete subcontractor will begin preparing the northside of the intersections for concrete pours by building the forms that will hold the concrete mixture.

Two-way cul-de-sacs will continue to be in place to maintain local access to homes and businesses leading up to the intersection closure.

This work is weather dependent.

Crews use a vac truck to remove water and other debris from underground trench.

After removing the old concrete, crews complete remaining utility work before beginning work to install new concrete panels that cover utility pipes.

2. Grinding pavement on S 3rd St

Before repaving, we need to grind the street down to create a level surface for the new pavement. In the meantime, these temporary grooves may make driving downtown a little bumpier and louder. Grinding of pavement on S 3rd is scheduled during the day of 9/16.

Through traffic on both S 2nd St and S 3rd St will continue to be reduced to a single-lane to avoid confusion at the all-way stops.

3. Stormwater work on S 3rd St

We will begin stormwater utility installation on S 3rd St the week of September 13,  moving east between Shattuck Ave S and Morris Ave S on the north side of S 3rd St. Street parking will be affected; alternate parking is available in the City Center Parking Garage. The intersection of S 3rd St and Shattuck Ave S may continue to be closed during the daytime early in the week. Once the line crosses to the north side of S 3rd St, a travel lane will open on the south side of the street. Daytime intersection closures at Morris Ave S and Whitworth Ave S may be necessary, in which case a detour to Shattuck Ave S and S 4th St will be in place. This phase of work is expected to last into October.

4. Stormwater work on Morris Ave S

We will begin trenching and pipe installation for stormwater utilities on Morris Ave S starting as early as September 13. Morris Ave S will remain closed during daytime work hours, opening again each evening. This work is expected to take up to two weeks.

5. Resuming construction on Houser Way S

The Houser Way Intersection & Pedestrian Improvements is planning to resume installing new sidewalk, ADA improvements, and a water main. Starting Monday, September 13, the Contractor is expected to begin mobilization in the vicinity of Wells Ave S, Williams Ave S, and Houser Way S. Expect traffic on Wells Ave S and Williams Ave S to be reduced to one lane at Houser Way S. during this project.

Sewer casing installation on Whitworth Ave S (not shown on map)

Crews will continue to work on Saturday, Sept. 11 to complete sewer casing work on Whitworth Ave S. An extension of the work schedule at this site was necessary due to underground site conditions that slowed our progress. Work is expected to be complete and the road open by the end of the day.

UPCOMING WORK

Sewer on Whitworth Ave S

Starting the week of September 20, we will begin sewer utility improvements on Whitworth Ave S between S 2nd and S 3rd streets. The road will be closed during daytime work hours, opening again each evening. Street parking will be closed along Whitworth Ave S throughout the duration of this work. Alternate parking is available in the City Center Parking Garage. You may see activity on Whitworth Ave S or at the intersection of Whitworth and S 3rd St the week of Sept. 13 in preparation for this upcoming work.

Paving S 3rd St

In the coming weeks, the contractor plans to pave S 3rd St between Burnett Ave S and Main Ave S. We will likely pave overnight to minimize the disruption. We will keep you up to date as we learn more.

Parking sign

The City Center Parking Garage offers free parking for access to downtown businesses through December of this year and can also be used by residents during construction. The garage is accessible between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Overnight parking is allowed during our construction efforts, but please note that all garage doors are locked outside of these hours. In addition, street parking is available on S 3rd St.
