CURRENT CONSTRUCTION IN DOWNTOWN RENTON

Downtown construction map. Construction details on map outlined in text below following map.

1. Rebuilding the southside intersections on S 2nd St at Williams Ave S and Wells Ave S

We are continuing to rebuild the southside intersections on S 2nd St at Williams Ave S and Wells Ave S. We’ve built the forms that will hold the concrete mixture and are pouring concrete in phases to reduce the risk of cracking while the mixture cures and hardens. Two-way cul-de-sacs will continue to be in place to maintain local access to businesses leading up to the intersection closure.

Once we rebuild the southside of the intersections, we will flip the cul-de-sacs to the northside of the intersections and begin working to rebuild the northside. We may implement the northside detours as early as next week.

This work is weather dependent.

Several construction workers use concrete finish equipment to spread out concrete mixture.

While pouring a concrete panel, crews use concrete finish equipment to place and consolidate the concrete in the form before it begins to cure and harden.

2. Construction continues on S 2nd St and S 3rd St

We’re continuing work on S 2nd St and 3rd St between Main Ave S and Burnett Ave S.

Through traffic on both S 2nd St and S 3rd St will continue to be reduced to a single-lane to avoid confusion at the all-way stops.

3. Storm Utility work on S 2nd St

DUIP continues installation storm utility work on S 2nd St between Morris Ave S and Shattuck Ave S and is anticipated to be completed next week. This work began work at S 2nd St and Shattuck Ave S moving east towards Morris Ave S. During construction, S 2nd St will be reduced to two lanes on the south side of the street.

4. Sewer on Morris Ave S

This week, DUIP began sewer utility improvements on Morris Ave S between S 2nd and S 3rd streets. Vehicle access will be maintained with some lane restrictions. Street parking will be closed along Morris Ave S. Alternate parking is available in the City Center Parking Garage or along S 3rd Street.

5. Sewer on Shattuck Ave S

This week, DUIP began Sewer main installation on Shattuck Ave S between S 2nd and S 3rd streets. Work will progress north of S 3rd St and move towards S 2nd St. Vehicle access will be maintained with some lane restrictions.

UPCOMING WORK

Rebuilding sidewalks and upgrading utilities on Houser Way

The Houser Way Intersection & Pedestrian Improvements began work in coordination with the Wells Ave S and Williams Ave S Conversion Project in fall 2020. The project is planning to resume installing new sidewalk, ADA improvements, and a water main after Labor Day. Our intent is to maintain one lane of traffic on Wells Ave S, Williams Ave S, and Houser Way.

Sewer on Whitworth Ave S

In September, we will begin sewer utility improvements on Whitworth Ave S between S 2nd and S 3rd streets. Vehicle access will be maintained with some lane restrictions. Please follow posted signage for safe access. Street parking will be closed along Morris Ave S. Alternate parking is available in the City Center Parking Garage or along S 3rd Street.

Grinding and paving S 3rd St

In the coming weeks, the contractor plans to grind S 3rd St between Burnett Ave S and Main Ave S to prepare for new pavement. We will likely pave overnight to minimize the disruption. We will keep you up to date as we learn more.

Parking sign

The City Center Parking Garage offers free parking for access to downtown businesses through December of this year and can also be used by residents during construction. The garage is accessible between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
