Downtown Renton Construction: Continuing utility and sidewalk work in downtown Renton

DT Construction Header

Hi everyone,

Franchise utility providers are in downtown Renton making upgrades and working on existing infrastructure. If they require a temporary service interruption, the utility providers will notify the impacted properties in advance.

The Downtown Construction Utility Improvement Project will shift their typical Tuesday construction hours from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. to 12 p.m. for the next 6 – 8 weeks to minimize impacts to the Renton Farmers Market. Access to businesses and local events will be maintained, and directional signage and on-site crews will direct traffic.

In the next week or so, the Wells-Williams Conversion Project will turn on the flashing stop signals at Wells Ave S and Williams Ave S on S 3rd St and S 2nd St. The Wells Ave S and Williams Ave S intersections on S 3rd St and S 2nd St will continue to operate as all-way stops. The flashing stop signs will also remain in place.

CURRENT CONSTRUCTION IN DOWNTOWN RENTON

1. Sidewalk work on S 3rd St at Williams Ave S and Wells Ave S

Our concrete subcontractor completed their first sidewalk concrete pours at the northwest corner of S 3rd St at Williams Ave S this week. The weather forecast is currently predicting rain through the middle of next week, during which we can’t pour concrete. We’re tracking the forecast closely so we can take advantage of any opportunities to continue pouring. In the meantime, the subcontractor plans to continue preparing the remaining corners on S 3rd St at Williams Ave S and Wells Ave S by building the forms. We’ll keep you up to date as we learn more.

In the meantime, if you need help with deliveries or customer access please don’t hesitate to call (425) 363-1007.

Forming pouring sealing

The concrete subcontractor builds the forms that will hold the concrete that is poured. To account for expansion and reduce the risk of cracking while curing, the pouring of concrete is completed in segments.

The concrete subcontractor uses the forms as a mold to hold the concrete mix that is poured.  After pouring, work is done to even out and smooth the concrete so there are no air bubbles or lumps.

After a sealant is applied and the concrete is allowed to cure, the concrete hardens and is ready to be walked on.

2. Utility work on S 2nd St between Main Ave S and Burnett Ave S continues

The Wells-Williams Conversion Project is continuing utility work on S 2nd St. Through traffic on S 2nd St will continue to be reduced to a single-lane to give crews the space they need to work on underground utilities.

3. Stormwater Utility Work on Shattuck Ave S

DUIP completed utility work south of S 3rd St on Shattuck Ave S. Next week, we will work on north of S 3rd St on Shattuck Ave S. Through traffic on Shattuck Ave S will continue to be reduced to one lane both directions. Please follow posted signs and directions from flaggers for safe access.

4. Sewer Utility Work on S 3rd St

DUIP continues dewatering work on S 3rd St between Burnett Ave S and Logan Ave S in preparation for sewer replacement. Construction crews made the initial connection to the King County Interceptor this week and will continue installing the sewer main between Burnett Ave S and Logan Ave S. During construction work hours, S 3rd St will be closed between Burnett Ave S and Logan Ave S and reduced to one lane between Logan Ave S and Rainier Ave S. A detour to S 4th St via Shattuck Ave S and Burnett Ave S is in place to route traffic around this construction. Signage for local and business access will be in place along the detour route. During non-work hours, S 3rd St will maintain a minimum of one lane of traffic throughout the project area (Burnett Ave S to Rainier Ave S). Work will continue moving west, block-by-block, towards Rainier Ave S. Road Closures on S 3rd Street will move west with the construction efforts.

DUIP detour map

Noted street closures are daytime closures during construction hours. A minimum of one lane will be open on S 3rd Street after construction hours. Please follow posted signs and directions from flaggers for safe access.

5. Storm Utility work on S 3rd St

Storm utility work on S 3rd St east of Rainier Ave S continues. Work will move east and stop just west of Shattuck Ave S. Local access on S 3rd St will be maintained. Two north lanes of S 3rd St will be closed, reducing it to one lane between Shattuck Ave S and Rainier Ave S. Work is expected to continue through June.
