Ocean Pollution Solutions
If you think of oceans as merely vast amounts of water that exists between land masses, or if you don’t think much about oceans at all, think again. Our daily survival, the very existence of life on Earth, depends on the health of oceans because they:
- Generate most of the oxygen we breathe
- Regulate our climate
- Clean the water we drink
- Help feed us
Whether one lives inland or on the coast, we are all linked to, and through, the ocean. How we maintain our cars, the clothes we wear, the plastic-packaged products we buy, the type of cleaning, gardening and personal care products we use all impact the health of our oceans. So as we celebrate World Oceans Day on June 8, let us work to protect our oceans by learning how our actions affect oceans and the changes we can make to be better stewards, because frankly, oceans deserve better.
To help you learn about oceans and ocean conservation, the Seattle Aquarium and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have special events planned in honor of World Oceans Day:
NOAA Open House Friday, June 9, 12pm – 6:30pm 7600 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle, WA 98115
Tour NOAA’s facilities and learn about various NOAA programs including the National Weather Service, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory, NOAA Fisheries West Coast Region, Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Northwest Fisheries Science Center, Washington SeaGrant, National Ocean Service, NOAA Corps, and more.
The Seattle Aquarium Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11 1483 Alaskan Way, Pier 59, Seattle, WA 98101
With the theme, “Be an Ocean Hero,” all of the talks and activities will engage you in actions that we can all do to be Ocean Heroes on an individual, community and civic level.
