Distance Learning Updates

Buildings to Remain Closed  — Distance Learning Still in Session!

On May 6, State Superintendent of Education Dr. Karen Salmon announced that all Maryland public schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year. Although school buildings are closed, our distance learning program will continue through the end of the school year. Plans for summer academic enrichment and what to expect in the fall are forthcoming.

Class of 2020 eGraduation Celebration Announced

On Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31, we will host a systemwide virtual graduation celebration in honor of the Class of 2020 with a commencement address by Oxon Hill High School alum Taraji P. Henson! The celebration will air on ABC7 News.

New Meal Sites + Supper Now Available

Families can now pick up supper as part of their “grab and go” meals and six new schools are offering meal service: Dodge Park, Gaywood, Judith P. Hoyer Montessori, Mary Harris “Mother" Jones and Rosa Parks elementary schools, and Ernest E. Just Middle School. Meals will continue to be served twice a week, on Mondays and Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

2019-2020 Calendar Update

The PGCPS calendar has been adjusted to reflect changes related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The school system requested a waiver of the state-mandated 180-day school year for the 10-day state closure from March 16-27. Five days were waived. The remaining five days must be made up, pushing back the last day of school one week to June 16 for students and June 18 for teachers.

On Hold: 2020-21 School Year Registrations

Due to COVID-19 and continued school building closures, registration for prekindergarten, kindergarten, transitional and lottery programs is on hold. Updates will be provided as available. 

Grab-n-Go Play for Youth!

Each Friday from noon to 2 p.m., the Department of Parks and Recreation is offering free recreation materials including jump ropes, chalk, art kits, games and more! Participating locations include the Marlow Heights, Oakcrest and Glenarden community centers.

Parks and Recreation Summer Camps Canceled

The Department of Parks and Recreation announced all traditional summer camps are canceled and will be replaced by virtual programming. Classes and events for June are also canceled. More info

Summer Youth Employment Program Canceled

The County's 2020 Summer Youth Enrichment Program has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Q3/Q4 Grade Change Window Extension

The Maryland State Board of Education approved a statewide waiver extending the grade change window for third and fourth quarter to January 1, 2021. In addition, all students who receive an Incomplete (I) grade for fourth quarter will have an opportunity to make up the work missed, once school reopens in the fall, for a Pass grade (P).
