Six New Middle Schools Slated for Construction

The Board of Education approved a resolution outlining the construction of six new PGCPS middle schools. Drew-Freeman, Hyattsville, Kenmoor and Walker Mill Middle Schools will be rebuilt. Additionally, a new middle school will be built in the Adelphi area as well as one in the southern part of the county. Read more>>

On Monday, CEO Dr. Monica Goldson hosted the second  "Mornings with Monica" at the Brandywine Starbucks where community members had the opportunity to enjoy a cup of coffee, offer feedback and share ideas about the new school year.

PGCPS Pride

Hyattsville Middle School R.E.L.A. Teacher Tiffany Barbour is described as a powerful educator, role model and gift to her students. "She has a calming influence and is a very caring teacher. Her style is infectious and she lights up the room when she enters," said Tonya Kerry, Reading and English Language Arts teacher. Kerry expressed gratitude for Barbour's encouragement in her first year as a new teacher. 

Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School Crisis Intervention Resource Teacher Devin Omealy goes above and beyond his role, says Assistant Principal Karess McNeil. Omealy has built meaningful relationships with students to ensure their success.

Each year, benefits offerings are reviewed to give employees high-quality, affordable options that make efficient use of the nearly $1 billion investment in employee salaries and benefits.

For 2020, PGCPS will introduce changes that will provide more distinct levels of choice. In the coming weeks, employees will receive more information to help outline options for individuals and families:

  • What You Need to Know outlines what’s new for 2020.
  • 2020 PGCPS Benefits Decision Guide available online includes information to help make the most of your benefit options.

Don’t forget to show PGCPS pride by sharing selfies for inclusion in upcoming benefits communication. Send high-resolution photos (unreduced in .jpg format) to PGCPSselfie@gmail.com by Sept. 30. Be sure to include name, department and/or location.

ICYMI: In Case You Missed It

State Board of Education Teacher Member Election

The Maryland State Department of Education will conduct a statewide election to fill the newly-created teacher member position on the State Board of Education (SBOE).  The individual with the most votes will have their name forwarded to the Governor for appointment to the SBOE. Please monitor the MSDE website for updated information at www.marylandpublicschools.org.


Nominations Open: New Award to Honor PGCPS Principals

Bowie State University is currently accepting nominations for the new Honorable James E. Proctor Jr. Excellence in Education Award. The award will go to a PGCPS principal who has served in their position for a minimum of three years. Nominations must be made by the immediate supervisor, fellow principals, community member or parent. Nominations are due by Oct. 4 and should be submitted to mcovingt@pgcps.org for review by CEO Dr. Monica Goldson.

The Excellence in Education Foundation will host the inaugural Prince George's County Public Schools Hall of Fame Gala on Friday, Oct. 18 at MGM National Harbor. Inductees include Sugar Ray Leonard (Parkdale HS '74), Kenny Lattimore (Eleanor Roosevelt HS '85), Pastor John K. Jenkins Sr. (DuVal HS '76), State Sen. Mike Miller (Surrattsville HS '60), Delegate Jazz Lewis (Charles Herbert Flowers HS '07), Dr. Tuajuanda C. Jordan (Suitland HS '78) and Celeste Williams.
