Saying goodbye to MAX Type 1

Our original MAX trains are leaving the station.

To the thousands of you who attended our retirement party in Holladay Park — thank you! We loved all of the heartfelt messages and fond memories you left on the side of MAX car 124.

Our fleet of next-generation Type 6 MAX trains has replaced the Type 1s. Check out this video to see how the retired vehicles will be part of our future — even after they are recycled.

Saving money at the pump

Fuel prices are sky-high. Just about everyone is feeling the pinch — unless, of course, you’re saving money by riding TriMet.

If you drive regularly, you could spend about $300 on fuel in a month at today’s prices. When you ride TriMet, you don’t pay more than $100 a month. Parking at TriMet Park & Rides is free, so leave your car behind and take the bus or train!

Staying safe around transit vehicles

Follow four simple steps to be safe around TriMet’s buses and trains: stay alert, listen and look, obey signs and signals, and make yourself visible.

Safety is a core value for TriMet, and we get tens of thousands of people safely to their destinations every day. Safe transit service doesn’t “just happen,” though — it takes all of us working together.

Thanking members of Congress for supporting transit

U.S. Reps. Maxine Dexter and Suzanne Bonamici recently secured over $1.4 million in federal grants for TriMet. With Rep. Dexter’s help, we obtained $931,200 to speed up buses and improve reliability along Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Southeast 50th Avenue and Southeast Foster Road. And, thanks to Rep. Bonamici, we received $500,000 to help replace TriMet LIFT paratransit vehicles that are reaching the end of their useful service life.

We depend on grant funding for projects that keep riders moving, maintaining a state of good repair and upgrading our system with the latest technology. Investments like these are vital for TriMet and our riders.

Improving transit access to the future James Beard Public Market

Construction is underway to improve two bus stops on Southwest Alder Street in Downtown Portland. These stops, at 6th and 10th avenues, serve the future home of the James Beard Public Market. More spacious bus shelters upcycled from our vintage MAX stations will be installed as part of these improvements.

The work builds on the first phase of construction, completed back in 2022, which created a bus-priority “Rose Lane” on Alder Street to help keep Line 15-Belmont/NW 23rd out of traffic. Line 15 riders may experience delays during construction.

Investing in transit and safety in Washington County

Line 57-TV Hwy/Forest Grove has more riders than any other bus line in Washington County. Yet some people choose not to ride, or ride less often, because of safety concerns and long travel times on busy Tualatin Valley Highway.

Working with project partners, the TV Highway Transit & Safety Project proposes major changes to improve road and pedestrian safety, speed up transit trips, and accommodate more riders on this popular bus line. Read all about it in our new blog post!

Upgrading the Hop Fastpass® app

We’ve totally rebuilt our Hop Fastpass® app to be faster and more reliable. If you use the app, you’ll receive a prompt when it’s time to upgrade to the new Hop experience on iOS and Android smartphones.

Your Hop account, cards and balance will remain the same. We’ve kept existing features and started adding new ones. For example, if you’re on Android, you can now convert your plastic Hop card into a virtual card. More improvements are on their way later in 2026 and 2027, so stay tuned!

TriMet MAX train in Portland City Center

Did you know? Doing our part for our region and planet

Every year, our bus, MAX and WES service prevents more than 30,000 tons of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) in vehicle emissions. Over a recent 12-month period, TriMet’s emissions impact was equivalent to avoiding 10.8 million car trips!

When more people ride transit, fewer vehicles are on the road. That means less pollution and congestion, and safer streets and highways. Transit lines, including the zero-emissions MAX and Portland Streetcar systems, also increase property values and encourage mixed-use, transit-friendly development. In all of these ways and more, everyone benefits from transit — riders and non-riders alike!
