TriMet is delaying proposed route changes to Line 17-Holgate/Broadway and Line 96-Tualatin/I-5 until at least mid-2026.
The proposed changes had included:
- Shifting Line 17 several blocks east onto Northeast 33rd Avenue, and adding service to Grant High School. That would have led to adjusting the routes of Line 8-Jackson Park/NE 15th and Line 70-12th/NE 33rd Ave to better align with the new Line 17 route.
- Moving Line 96 off Interstate 5 to a new route to serve sections of Lake Grove and Southwest Portland, and add service to Portland Community College’s Sylvania Campus and the Barbur Transit Center.
Community engagement is an important part of our service improvement process. We hold open houses, take public comment at TriMet Board meetings, gather online feedback, conduct surveys and more. During the engagement period for the proposed changes to Line 17 and Line 96, we heard from many riders concerned they would have longer travel times and farther distances to reach stops.
Instead of making the planned changes to the lines 17, 8, 70 and 96 this summer, TriMet will reconsider them for August 2026, if ridership does not increase.
TriMet is committed to providing safe, reliable and convenient public transportation for all. We continuously evaluate how we can best serve our riders and meet the needs of our region with the resources that are available to us. We’ve been working hard over the past several years to make the bus a better option for more people, especially those with low and limited incomes. We have also been looking at ways to make our transit system more efficient and effective, considering changes in travel patterns and growth trends in our region since the COVID-19 pandemic.
