How we're beating the heat, budgeting for the coming year, providing access to transit for those who rely on us, celebrating operators and more

See what we've been up to at TriMet!

Making MAX improvements for reliability

An upcoming MAX improvement project will keep trains moving when the mercury soars! Our crews will be working on the MAX Blue Line between the Gateway/NE 99th Ave Transit Center and the Cleveland Ave MAX Station April 27-May 3, then between 172nd Ave and Cleveland Ave stations May 4-10. Shuttle buses will help riders around the disruptions. Plan ahead by visiting trimet.org and leave extra time for travel.

These improvements will provide better reliability and a smoother ride on MAX, but that’s not all! We’re also replacing 8,000 feet of overhead wire. Plus, we’re installing an innovative new tensioning system for the wires that will help keep trains running at regular speeds during summer heat!

Budgeting responsibly for the future

We’ve proposed a $1.94 billion balanced budget for the next fiscal year, starting July 1, 2025. This proposal reflects TriMet’s commitment to being a responsible steward of public money. It also fits with TriMet’s vision of providing safe, convenient and sustainable transportation throughout our region. Submit feedback via email to hello@trimet.org or by calling our Customer Service team at 503-238-7433 (RIDE).

The TriMet Board of Directors will meet to consider the budget in April before adoption, expected in May.

Celebrating the people who keep us on the move

Together with public transit agencies across North America, TriMet celebrated Transit Driver Appreciation Day on March 18. Employees and fans lined city blocks in Downtown Portland and turned out at transit centers to wave and cheer on our 1,600+ operators who keep our buses, MAX and WES trains, Portland Streetcars and LIFT paratransit vehicles moving.

Show your appreciation to your transit operator whenever you ride! A kind word, a “thank you” or even a wave can brighten an operator’s day.

Sharing the love

As we celebrate our operators, we’ve been sharing some great stories of those who always go the extra mile to serve their riders and the community. Sean’s story, which is featured in a new video, might take the cake.

Sean is already a beloved driver on Line 14-Hawthorne/Foster. He recently donated a motorized wheelchair to one of his regular riders. Bill has mobility challenges. “It just came out of the blue,” Bill says of the donation. The two have become good friends and expect to continue that friendship.

Giving Thorns fans a ride

The Portland Thorns FC are back in action! TriMet partners with the Thorns and the Timbers, so game tickets double as fare on MAX, buses, TriMet LIFT and Portland Streetcar when traveling to or from the match!

TriMet is the best way to get to Providence Park! That’s why we’ve also teamed up for summer concerts. Just like the Thorns and Timbers games, you’ll be able to use your concert ticket as proof of fare for up to three hours before and after the show!

Helping people access transit

Applications are open now for TriMet's Access Transit grant program supporting people with low and limited income. We provide grants for up to $75,000 in TriMet fare to nonprofits that work with people living on low incomes in the Portland metro area. These nonprofits then distribute fare cards to people who would otherwise struggle to afford fare. We’re accepting applications from nonprofits through June 1, 2025.

We also offer Honored Citizen reduced fare for people who qualify based on income, adults age 65 and older, military and veterans, and people with disabilities. Frequent riders pay no more than $28 a month for unlimited rides. Find out more on our website.

Getting around station construction

Construction ahead! Riders at the Portland International Airport MAX Station may notice some work taking place on and around the platform from April 5-20. The MAX station will be open during construction, but some areas may be off-limits for safety. Signs will be posted to help you avoid any confusion getting to and from your train.

Hiring for key positions in maintenance and more

We take pride in providing safe, accessible and reliable transit service to the Portland metro region. To keep buses and trains reliable, we need to hire more mechanics, technicians, maintainers and others who keep our system ship-shape! Check out this new video for a peek into what it’s like to work on TriMet’s maintenance team.

TriMet offers competitive pay and great benefits. Operators and select maintenance positions offer a $7,500 hiring bonus. We also provide pathways for advancement, job skills and leadership training, and tuition reimbursement. In 2024, Forbes Magazine ranked TriMet as its top Oregon-based employer, based on a survey of employees!

Did you know? Keeping MAX on the move

You know what a MAX station is — it’s where you get on or off the train! But what about a MAX substation? Our new video takes you behind the scenes.

Substations take the electricity that flows through power lines and convert it into power for MAX trains, electrifying the overhead wires you see above our tracks. MAX is a zero-emissions system that runs on 100% renewable energy, so when you skip the drive and hop on MAX instead, you can be proud. You’re doing your part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and keep our air clean!

Stay involved! Upcoming public meetings

The next TriMet Board of Directors regular business meeting is on Wednesday, April 23. The Board will also meet Wednesday, April 30, for a strategy session and board retreat.

The Committee on Accessible Transportation meets virtually the third Wednesday of each month from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
