See what we've been up to at TriMet!
A Better Red has arrived! With our A Better Red MAX Extension and Reliability Improvements Project officially complete, you can now enjoy a one-seat MAX ride between Hillsboro and PDX. The 10-station MAX Red Line extension means fewer transfers, shorter wait times and more options for taking transit to and from Washington County! Track improvements and other major upgrades made as part of the project are making MAX more reliable and reduced delays across the entire MAX system.
TriMet was honored to have Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Acting Administrator Veronica Vanterpool join us for our A Better Red Official Opening Ceremony. We thank all of our local, state and federal partners for the dedication and support that delivered this project to the region on time and on budget.
We’ve also improved bus service throughout the region with another round of Forward Together service updates! Clackamas County leaders have been calling for more transit service for years, and they celebrated its arrival with a ribbon-cutting alongside TriMet General Manager Sam Desue Jr.
The latest bus service improvements make it easier for people to make connections across the tri-county area. They include two new bus lines; route extensions to reach new areas; and schedule and other adjustments to serve riders better. Check out the details, including maps for each bus line, at trimet.org/servicechange. Then go to trimet.org to plan your trip and track your ride!
At TriMet, we’ve doubled our safety and security staff in recent years, and now we’re stepping up fare inspections, and reminding the public about our Rules for Riding. We want our system to be clean, safe and welcoming for all riders. A new state law takes effect Sept. 1, making possession of drugs in public spaces a misdemeanor offense. That means not only is drug use on TriMet a violation of our rules, it could lead to jail time.
If riders see drug use or any other type of disruptive or unsafe behavior on TriMet, please report it. Call or text 503-238-7433 (RIDE) to report non-emergencies. For urgent matters, call or text 911.
Join this year’s week-long Get There Car Free Challenge in September for a chance to win prizes. There are two easy ways to participate:
- Pledge to drive less during the week of Sept. 16–22.
- Log 2 or more trips in Get There Connect by transit, walking, biking, scooter, carpooling, and vanpooling for a chance to win prizes.
Any trip that replaces a drive-alone trip counts whether it’s for work, school, running errands, going to appointments, or having fun! Get started at GetThereOregon.org.
We’re now providing late-night service on buses in place of MAX trains. This change will allow for more overnight maintenance and cleaning on MAX while continuing to provide transit service to riders after midnight.
Out of all U.S. light rail systems, MAX had the second-shortest overnight window of time when no trains were running — just 47 minutes — until now! With this adjustment, riders should experience cleaner trains and fewer service disruptions. Check out maps and schedules for these new bus lines at trimet.org/maxbus.
Going green has never looked so good! TriMet is rolling out 24 next-generation battery-electric buses! These new buses are clean, quiet and comfortable. Powerful electric motors and expanded battery capacity mean they can run along some of our longest routes, including areas that often experience worse air quality than the rest of the region.
The first of those buses began welcoming riders aboard on the Line 9-Powell in late July, but we’re increasing the areas and bus lines they serve. Keep an eye out for them on Line 72-Killingsworth/82nd, our highest-ridership bus line.
Not only is bus service getting better, it’s also getting faster! We’ve teamed up with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) to install AI-assisted transit signal priority technology at several intersections throughout Portland. The latest to get this upgrade are three intersections in the Hillsdale neighborhood, along busy Southwest Capitol Highway.
The technology gives buses more green lights and shorter waits at reds, adding up to time savings for riders. Early analysis shows they’re saving up to 10 minutes each week thanks to Capitol Highway improvements. Other traffic, pedestrians and bicyclists benefit as well from this smart system, reducing congestion and pollution.
TriMet is hiring! Earlier this year, we opened up our coveted MAX operator jobs to the general public for the first time. We received over 850 applications. Some of those applicants are now operator trainees. The recruitment is closed for now but will likely reopen to the public in the future. In the meantime, we’re also hiring bus operators, maintenance workers, mechanics and more. Some jobs offer a hiring bonus of up to $7,500! It’s a great time to come on board! Learn more and apply at trimet.org/careers.
TriMet is proud to support our state and local partners as they break ground on the 82nd Avenue Major Maintenance project. Led by the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), this initiative will transform the 82nd Avenue corridor, one of the busiest in Portland.
This project will improve pedestrian and traffic safety; make 82nd Avenue more walkable and accessible for people with disabilities; add street trees for shade; and improve access to Line 72. We’re working with Metro and other local partners to open our second TriMet FX™ — Frequent Express — line along 82nd Avenue by 2029.
The Adult Soap Box Derby is one of Portland’s fun, quirky summer traditions. Every August, custom-built unpowered racers congregate at Mount Tabor and race down the slope.
We were tickled to see a TriMet bus among the racers this year! Representing the fictitious Line 3-Mt. Tabor, this miniature wooden bus zipped down the road without even having to worry about someone pulling the cord to request a stop. Creators Tony and Monica (no relation to TriMet) did us proud with this one!
