See what we've been up to at TriMet!
TriMet is improving bus and MAX service starting Sunday, Aug. 25, as we roll out one of our largest service changes in years! We’re introducing new bus lines to serve new areas, connecting communities and more people with opportunities. Our Better Red 10-station MAX Red Line extension into Hillsboro also opens in late August. Trains will arrive every 7 or 8 minutes and more people will have a one-seat ride to and from PDX. Here’s a preview of what else to expect:
- Two new bus lines added: 40-Tacoma/Swan Island and 153-Stafford/Salamo
- Service extended to Oregon City for some weekday trips on Line 76-Hall/Greenburg
- Buses running in place of late-night MAX trains on Blue, Orange, Red and Yellow lines
- Three MAX stations get updated names
- Some bus lines with low ridership eliminated and service moved to areas where it is needed more
Visit trimet.org and plan your trip. Set the date to Aug. 25 or later to see schedules and routes that include the changes that are now just weeks away from taking effect.
TriMet’s Board of Directors has appointed Dr. LaVerne Lewis as its new President. It’s a historic decision: Lewis will be the first person of African American descent to serve in this role. Lewis is an educator, veteran of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, founder of the nonprofit Women-SEW Global Foundation, professional business owner and a three-year TriMet Board member. She holds a Doctor of Education degree. Her first meeting as Board President will be Sept. 25.
We’re on the road to a 100% zero-emissions bus fleet by 2040 and new federal funding will help us get there! The U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded a $39 million grant to TriMet to add as many as 14 fuel-cell electric buses to our fleet—our first such buses to be powered by hydrogen. These fuel-cell electric buses will be headed for one of the busiest corridors in the region: 82nd Avenue. We’re working with our partners at Metro to establish a TriMet FX™ line along 82nd, similar to FX2-Division. Welcome to the future!
Special thanks to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the FTA, along with Rep. Earl Blumenauer, Sen. Ron Wyden, Sen. Jeff Merkley, Rep. Suzanne Bonamici and Rep. Andrea Salinas who helped secure this grant, as well as the support of the Oregon Congressional delegation.
Come work for TriMet! We are offering $7,500 hiring bonuses for new bus operators and $2,500 bonuses for select maintenance and mechanic positions. We are moving quickly to hire key staff so we can continue improving service, bring more riders onboard and build for the future. TriMet offers competitive pay, outstanding benefits and opportunities for professional advancement. Steer your career to TriMet! Visit trimet.org/careers.
Graffiti and vandalism affect our whole community. That’s why we joined with our partners in a whole-community solution on Sunday, July 14. TriMet crews worked shoulder-to-shoulder with partners from the Oregon Department of Transportation, the Portland Bureau of Transportation, Multnomah County, Metro and more — including a special guest volunteer, Gov. Tina Kotek — to clean up a 5-mile stretch of the Banfield Freeway in Northeast Portland. MAX service was temporarily suspended through the area for workers’ safety. The shutdown gave our crews time and space to do some cleaning of their own, along MAX tracks and platforms.
Here’s what we did, by the numbers:
- Gallons of paint applied: 355
- Pounds of trash removed: 4,500
- Square feet of surfaces cleaned: 20,000
- Pounds of brush removed: 2,600
- Total labor hours: 200+
- Hours MAX was disrupted: 12
You might have seen workers in yellow safety vests pressure-washing platforms or repainting shelters at our MAX stations. Our Clean Team does a lot to keep our surfaces in good shape! But that’s not all they do. Watch this Reel to see how the team tackles the trash that winds up in our MAX tracks!
You can help keep TriMet clean, too! If you see litter, graffiti or anything else that doesn’t look quite right, call or text 503-238-7433 (RIDE). For urgent security issues, call or text 911.
Did you know about one in three transit riders experience disability? July is Disability Pride Month! We’re recognizing the diversity of our community and commemorating the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. We’re featuring some amazing local artwork on a bus to mark the occasion. Theresa Bear and the Catlin Gabel School Neurodiversity Affinity Group created a design titled “Neurodiversity is Natural: Diverse Minds, Infinite Possibilities.” The bus will remain in our rotation for about a year.
