Making transit cleaner and more accessible

TriMet will step up enforcement of our rules for riding starting July 1. These rules cover everything from paying fare to not bringing items on board that block the access of other riders, especially those with mobility issues. That includes large items that block aisles and doors, or leak, including large bags of bottles and cans that may do both. Smoking is prohibited, as is bringing open containers of food and liquid that may spill and make a mess. Learn more about our rules for riding at trimet.org/howtoride/rules.

This is part of our ongoing effort to improve the experience of taking transit by making it cleaner, safer and more accessible.  Learn more at trimet.org/security.

Join us! Report items that are blocking, smoking and other non-urgent behavior on board to 503-238-RIDE (7433). If there’s an emergency, call 911.

RAISE grant Columbia

Charging ahead with RAISE grant

A $25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will help bring our vision for a zero-emissions bus fleet closer to reality. The Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant is a major award that will move TriMet closer to transforming our Columbia Operations Facility. Plans for the industrial site in Northeast Portland include a “home base” for our zero-emissions bus fleet, potentially including hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses. We thank the Oregon Congressional Delegation for their support in securing this award for TriMet!

I-84 graffiti with MAX

Teaming up for a major cleanup

TriMet will join our partners for a graffiti cleanup along the Banfield Freeway in July. Crews will remove trash and graffiti along a 5-mile stretch of Interstate 84. The work is taking place overnight July 13 into July 14, continuing into midday.

For safety, MAX service will be suspended between the Gateway/NE 99th Ave Transit Center and the NE 7th Ave MAX Station during the cleanup. It will resume in the afternoon of July 14. Shuttle buses will provide service while MAX is disrupted.

MAX sunny

Beating the heat

Summer is finally here, but TriMet started preparing for the season long ago. We’ve made upgrades on all of our MAX lines to make them more heat-resilient. For the first time, MAX this summer will be able to operate at regular speeds up to 100 degrees throughout the system!

Getting noticed for safety efforts

At TriMet, safety is at the heart of everything we do. Our commitment to safety is making a difference for our riders and getting noticed.

We were honored to receive the American Public Transportation Association’s (APTA) 2024 Rail Security Gold Award. It recognizes the work we’ve done to address safety and security challenges and create a model that other agencies can follow. This is the second year in a row that TriMet won the gold award.

Riders are seeing the results of these efforts. They now have an all-day connection to safety and security staff through our new Security Operations Center. We’ve also piloted a new elevator access control system that helps keep them in working order for the people who need them most.

SW 185th Avenue Crossing Construction

Smoothing the ride

TriMet recently improved the rail crossing at SW 185th Avenue. The construction was necessary due to wear and tear over the years. Working with contractor Stacy Witbeck,  the construction was completed over a weekend in May. Trains may now travel at regular speeds through the crossing and riders will experience a smoother ride.

Get There Bike Facility

Building a bike-friendly workplace

Supporting employees who want to bike to work can be low cost, and even free. Here are a few ideas:

Create a spot to hang and store bike helmets and jackets during the workday. Even a coat rack with a tub serves as a spot to dry items from the occasionally rainy bike ride.

Host a bike brown bag for employees to share their favorite rides and commuting tips.

Equip employees with route planning resources at GetThereOregon.org and Metro's online bike map.

Learn more about using bikes with transit at trimet.org/bikes.

Hiring operators, mechanics and more

As we improve service throughout our region, we need bus operators, MAX operators and mechanics more than ever. TriMet is offering hiring bonuses for many key positions, including a $7,500 bonus to new bus operators. Our workers also receive outstanding benefits, and we provide opportunities for advancement at every level.

If you know someone who might have what it takes to drive for TriMet or work on our transit vehicles, please send them to  our jobs page at trimet.org/careers.

Rose Fest parades 2024

Rolling in Rose Fest parades

A big thanks to the community for all of the cheers and smiles that you shared with TriMet during this year’s Rose Festival parades! Specially decorated buses with dazzling designs rolled in both the Starlight and Grand Floral parades. We were thrilled to see so many parade-goers choosing to leave their cars at home and let TriMet do the driving for Rose Fest. Our buses and trains saw ridership increase 20% on both Saturday parade days.

Pride bus 2024

Showing our ‘Pride’

We’re proud to feature the work of celebrated Portland artist Daniel Quasar on our latest diversity bus. Their striking design wraps our bus in colorful stripes representing the LGBTQ+ Pride flag. “From Progress to Beyond” celebrates Pride Month in June. The bus will also be part of the Portland Pride Parade on July 21.

David Bragdon

Did you know? #TBT 'A Bus Rider’s Manual'

He was just 14 years old when he released a 24-page book that he called, “A Bus Rider’s Manual, or Everything You Need to Know About Tri-Met But Didn’t Know Who to Ask.”

ICYMI, we recently posted the story of David Bragdon on our TriMet Facebook page. Back in the mid-1970s, he rode all 65 TriMet bus lines before he created the book of tips and tricks.

So where is he now?

A post to our Facebook page links to a Wikipedia page about  David's successful careers in civics, politics and urban transportation.
