Improving bus and MAX service, celebrating our operators, upgrading transit centers and more!

See what we've been up to at TriMet!

Downtown TriMet bus service

Improving bus and MAX service

TriMet hopes to roll out a number of changes in the next year and a half to improve our service and provide access to transit where more people live and work.

Our Board of Directors will vote on two proposals in April aimed at putting more bus service where it is needed most, keeping trains moving and reducing disruptions during the time of day more people are riding.

TriMet bus

Running more frequent bus service

TriMet’s Forward Together plan to make bus service better for those who rely on it enters year two! The plan — developed with the community — moves service from areas where buses are little used to communities where demand is higher, connecting people to jobs, school and services.

Among the changes in our service proposal for the coming fiscal year: More buses arriving more often on three of our most popular bus lines. Route changes to serve more jobs and schools. New bus lines. Some lines or areas would see less service. Learn more at trimet.org/betterbus/servicechanges-fy25proposed.htm.

Orange Night Bus

Expanding MAX night buses after midnight

Did you know MAX has one of the longest daily operating schedules of any light rail system in North America? There's only 47 minutes on a typical night when no MAX trains are running anywhere on our system. But just 2% of MAX's daily ridership is on the train between midnight and 4 p.m.

As part of the service plan our Board is considering, we want to run night buses along MAX Blue, Red and Yellow lines in place of trains after midnight. We’ve done this along the MAX Orange Line since it opened in 2015. This will give our crews more time to do maintenance and upgrades on the system during hours when most of our riders are fast asleep. It will also give us more time to work on and clean trains so they’re ready to roll every morning. Learn more at trimet.org/max/nightbuses.

Skidmore Fountain MAX Station

Speeding up MAX through Downtown Portland

We want to speed up MAX Blue and Red lines by closing the Skidmore Fountain MAX Station in 2025. This station is in between the Old Town/Chinatown and Oak/SW 1st stations. These three stations are just a few blocks apart.

Closing the Kings Hill/SW Salmon, Mall/SW 4th and Mall/SW 5th MAX stations in 2020 shaved about a minute and a half off MAX travel times in Downtown Portland. Closing the Skidmore Fountain MAX Station would save riders about 40 seconds more. These time savings add up! Learn more at trimet.org/maxdowntown and expect a vote from the TriMet Board on this proposal in April.

Gateway North MAX Station

Moving ahead on A Better Red

A Better Red is coming soon! We're now through the last planned service disruptions needed for the project.

The Gateway North MAX Station officially opened March 4. This station serves MAX Red Line trains heading from Portland International Airport toward City Center. We were thrilled to open this new station alongside our local and state partners. Thank you for your support!

We wrapped up the last disruption of the project just days ago as our focus turned to the west side and extending the MAX Red Line 10 stations west. When A Better Red is complete later this summer, the Red Line will run between Hillsboro and Portland's airport stations. That means faster and more convenient travel for riders and a better-connected west side.

Women's History Month TriMet bus wrap

Celebrating Women's History Month

"All Are Welcome" on TriMet! That's the message of our 2024 line of diversity buses. In March, we celebrated Women's History Month with an eye-catching design by Portland artist Allison McClay called "The Gardeners." McClay's art celebrates the contributions of women in our community, across the country and around the world.

Keep an eye out for this beautiful piece of rolling public art and our other special buses designed to honor Black History, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage, and more!

2024 Transit Driver Appreciation Day

Appreciating TriMet's amazing operators

March 18 is Transit Driver Appreciation Day! TriMet celebrated the annual day of recognition for transit operators with colorful and loud rallies on our Transit Mall and banners at transit centers. We're grateful to the community members who joined us and to the riders who showed kindness and courtesy to our employees on Transit Driver Appreciation Day — and every day.

Our bus, rail, streetcar and paratransit operators keep our region moving! They connect people to opportunities throughout our region, from jobs and school to health care and other services, as well as shopping, dining and other recreational pursuits.

We are already looking forward to next year!

MAX Blue Line in Gresham

Making a more comfortable ride

Part of the MAX Blue Line through Gresham will close from April 7 through April 13. Our work crews need that time to improve the crossing at SE Stark Street and E Burnside Street that has been in continuous use since MAX opened. That was in 1986!

Projects like this keep trains moving and create a smoother ride on board and for the autos that use the crossing. Shuttle buses will serve stations between the E 172nd Ave and Civic Drive MAX stations during the work.

SE Park Ave Park & Ride rendering

Building up our SE Park Avenue Park & Ride

TriMet has started construction to add two more floors onto our Park & Ride at the south end of the MAX Orange Line.

We originally planned a five-story parking garage at the SE Park Avenue Station but had to scale it down due to budget concerns. Since the MAX Orange Line project ended up coming in under budget, we’re now able to expand the Park & Ride in line with our original vision using remaining federal funds. This allows TriMet to meet the growing transit needs in North Clackamas County.

The five-story garage will have 735 parking spaces when it fully opens in spring 2025. Up to 40 electric vehicle charging stalls will also be added at a later date.

Hollywood Transit Center rendering

Did you know? Renovating Hollywood Transit Center with affordable housing

Construction is making way for hollywoodHUB — an affordable housing development that’s transforming the Hollywood Transit Center! We have a temporary ramp to access the MAX station during the construction, and it’s quite a sight! We created this short video to show riders how it works.

The Portland Design Commission has awarded hollywoodHUB its 2024 Design Excellence Award. This transit-oriented development will provide 222 units of affordable housing just steps away from multiple bus lines and the Hollywood MAX Station. TriMet is proud to partner with Holst Architecture and BRIDGE Housing on this important — and award-winning — project!
