New Year's Eve free rides

Ringing in the new year with safety in mind

Making plans for New Year’s Eve? Don’t forget to take TriMet along for the ride! We are continuing our decades-long tradition of providing free rides starting at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, and we’ll be out late this year with MAX service going until almost 3 a.m. on most lines!

Visit trimet.org to plan your trip. Remember to change the date to Jan. 1, 2024, if you’ll be out until the wee hours. Our partners at Portland Streetcar and C-TRAN are also offering free rides for New Year’s Eve. Visit their websites for details.

Hop Fastpass

Increasing some fares on Jan. 1, 2024

Some fares are going up on Jan. 1, 2024, bringing the first increase in TriMet’s base Adult Fare in more than a decade. The increase only affects Adult, Honored Citizen reduced fare, Youth Day Passes and 2 ½-Hour Tickets, along with LIFT paratransit Single Ride tickets.

Frequent riders who pay using Hop Fastpass™ cards and ride enough to reach the cap and earn a Month Pass will not experience an increase. Learn more here.

Construction at Gateway TC (A Better Red)

Considering options ahead of next 'A Better Red' disruption

The next MAX disruption for our “A Better Red” project is coming up in January, and it’s a big one. The work that starts Sunday, Jan. 14, will be so impactful to MAX Blue, Green and Red line service that you might want to consider other ways to get around during the six weeks of work, if possible.

Red Line service will be suspended, and Blue and Green lines disrupted, as the Gateway Transit Center will be closed to trains from Jan. 14 through Feb. 25. TriMet will provide shuttle buses, but riders should plan for significant delays. Fixed-route buses will continue to provide regular service during this time.

The upcoming work includes the last piece of a yearslong effort to rebuild segments of the MAX Red Line near the Gateway Transit Center and Portland International Airport. Construction of “A Better Red” is nearing 85%. The project is on track for completion by summer 2024.

Clean Team

Cleaning up transit centers and stations

Things are starting to look up at Gateway Transit Center. You may have noticed the work of our “Clean Team.” They’ve replaced aging equipment, repainted shelters and power-washed platforms. Elsewhere, starting with our oldest MAX stations, the Clean Team is working to revitalize public art, remove graffiti, improve landscaping and give the spaces a deep cleaning.

This team of workers supports the daily work done by our cleaning crews, who take care of spills and trash to keep vehicles as welcoming as possible during service. With a service area stretched across 533 square miles and about 1.3 million trips made each week, we’re keeping busy and planning to keep this spruce-up going strong through 2024!

Type 6 and T-shirt

Celebrating a successful year at TriMet

As the year begins to wind down, we’re taking a look back at how we moved our transit system forward in 2023. From debuting our next-generation Type 6 MAX train, to a full year of TriMet FX™ and big ridership increases on FX2-Division, we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you for coming along for the ride!

TriMet wrapped

Did you know? Making every trip count!

Just as you count on TriMet, TriMet is counting you too! We’re wrapping up our year with a look at the trips, taps and miles we’ve recorded throughout our transit system in 2023.

By the numbers, the MAX Blue Line was our most popular rail route, with nearly 35 million trips recorded. And altogether, TriMet buses logged more than 18 million miles. That’s more than halfway to Mars at its closest approach!

Check out more statistics — including the most popular bus line — on our Facebook page.
