See what we've been up to at TriMet!
It “isn’t about the cost to ride.. It’s about giving the recognition, respect and gratitude to those who are willing to make sacrifices to allow every American opportunities that we enjoy…”
TriMet was proud to deliver on that sentiment from Vietnam-era Air Force veteran Dale Thaler with the extension of our Honored Citizen reduced fare to active duty military, honorably discharged veterans and reservists. Find more information at trimet.org/military. TriMet’s Honored Citizen reduced fare is also available to riders based on age, disability and income. Visit trimet.org/save for details.
Starting Sunday, Dec. 3, Line 48-Cornell will become our 18th Frequent Service bus line! Frequent Service buses are ready when you are, arriving every 15 minutes or better for most of the day, every day. (Learn which other buses run most often at trimet.org/frequent!)
The Line 48 upgrade is part of our latest Forward Together service improvements. Look for updates to the Line 62-Murray Blvd route, more service on Line 70-12th/NE 33, changes to bus stops at Sunset Transit Center and other schedule changes to keep buses on time. Visit trimet.org and plan a trip for Dec. 3 or later to see how your ride might change!
Looking for a new career with the opportunity to grow? Our bus operators are getting a 4% pay boost on Dec. 1, 2023. The new starting pay will be $28.22 per hour. All bus operators get regular raises and are guaranteed to earn more than $78K after three years! We continue to offer a $7,500 hiring bonus to all new operators! We also have incentives for many positions in our Maintenance Division. Visit trimet.org/careers, and you may find the keys to your future!
Did you know that our Washington Park MAX Station is the deepest transit station in North America? And it’s served by a tunnel that runs nearly three miles through Portland’s West Hills? The station and tunnel provided a unique and challenging backdrop for the first emergency drill of its kind in almost a decade!
Emergency responders from more than 20 regional agencies converged on the station and tunnel on Sunday, Nov. 5, for a full-scale exercise required by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). While we hope a critical incident never happens here, the drill helped them prepare in case it does. (Learn why that is so important here.) Thank you to all the first responders who took part and our MAX Blue and Red Line riders for their patience and understanding.
We’re celebrating Native American Heritage Month with a newly decorated bus! The design for our November 2023 cultural celebration bus comes courtesy of artist Greg Archuleta, who is Clackamas Chinook, Santiam Kalapuya and Shasta, and a member of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. The vibrant piece focuses on “Ikanum,” or the stories of the Tribes. Keep an eye out for the bus as it serves TriMet riders throughout our region over the next year!
As the holidays approach, TriMet is busy checking our lists:
- Winter weather: Staff is trained and supplies are fully stocked for the winter weather that could be heading our way. When severe weather hits, we team up with partners like PBOT and ODOT to keep our riders moving. Visit trimet.org/winterweather for tips for riding during winter weather events.
- Clackamas Town Center detours: For the 11th straight year, we’re adjusting service at Clackamas Town Center to help people get around crowds this holiday season. Buses will detour to avoid mall traffic on Friday, Nov. 24, Saturday, Dec. 23, and Sunday, Dec. 24. The detours will be in place between 1- 6 p.m. Make sure to visit trimet.org/alerts and plan at least 15 minutes of extra time for travel on those dates.
- TriMet gear store: And speaking of that list… If your special someone is dreaming of decking out in the trendiest transit gear, check out the new merch at our Gear Store! We have the popular new “Type 6’ t-shirt, schematic posters that show all six types of MAX trains, and a fun new Dia de los Muertos-themed tote! Check it out for unique gifts, courtesy of TriMet!
What a difference a decade (plus a few years) makes! Our images of the South Waterfront before Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People, got people talking on our Facebook page! This was the view just 12 years ago and eight years before North America’s longest car-free bridge opened to transit vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
There are many, many interesting facts about Tilikum Crossing, but one that always catches attention is what creates the bridge’s brilliant light display. The lights are controlled by nature and change with the river’s temperature, tide level, height and water speed.
