Portland Airport MAX Station NEW A Better Red PDX

‘A Better Red’ now rolling at PDX

The new Portland Airport MAX Station at PDX has opened! With improvements made through our ongoing A Better Red project, there are now two tracks serving the station where there was only one. Watch this video to see the transformation!

Replacing single-track sections of the Red Line with double track will help reduce delays and improve reliability across the entire light rail system. Once complete in August of 2024, the A Better Red project will also extend the MAX Red Line  10 additional stations into Hillsboro.

Hollywood groundbreaking

Beginning the transformation of Hollywood Transit Center

Many thanks to our partners including BRIDGE Housing, who joined us for a small groundbreaking event that tips off a total transformation of the Hollywood Transit Center in Northeast Portland. Once complete, the new hollywoodHUB will be a community-centered, mixed-use, transit-oriented development with affordable housing, gathering space and modernized transit facilities. Construction activities will begin soon.

We Choose Love incorporation mural HTC Hollywood MAX Farahat Rendering

Elements from Sarah Farahat’s stunning work, “We Choose Love,” will be incorporated into the final design of the new space to serve as a lasting, permanent tribute to the tragic events of May 2017 on board a MAX train that was arriving at the Hollywood Transit Center.

Improving Safety and Security

We’re expanding our partnership with the Multnomah County District Attorney's office to hold more people accountable for crimes committed while on transit. Instead of one deputy DA to handle TriMet cases, we now have two, plus the assistance of up to two investigators. We are also taking more proactive measures to improve safety and security. Over the last year, we have:

  • Doubled the number of unarmed safety and security officers to more than 300 people on buses and trains and at transit centers.
  • Provided a new, 24-hour phone line for reporting non-emergency security issues at 503-238-7433 (RIDE). Text any time or if calling, choose option 9.
  • Installed security monitors in about 500 buses to help deter inappropriate behavior on board.

If you experience an emergency while riding TriMet, call 911 right away.

Type 6 train event

Getting a sneak peek at the Type 6 MAX

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Type 6 Sneak Peek event! We loved seeing all 1,000+ of you at the Park Ave MAX Station where our newest light rail train was put on display! These beauties will start rolling into service later this year.

Type 6 event family with tshirts

Couldn’t make it to the event? We’ve got you covered! Not only can you watch this great video, but we’ve also put the popular Type 6 t-shirt and MAX train poster up for sale at our merch store!

Type 1 trailer

Saying goodbye to our original MAX trains

As the new Type 6 trains are delivered, we are beginning to retire the original MAX train cars. (We call them the Type 1s.) They’ve been serving riders since 1986! Some of the trains have traveled more than 2 million miles. That’s equal to going around the Earth 80 times.

We will be preserving at least one of the trains for the Electric Railway Museum in Brooks, Ore. Most of the others will likely be recycled locally. Say “so long” to MAX car 102 with this reel that got more than 4,500 likes on Instagram!

Seeking feedback on future service proposals

At TriMet, we’re always planning for the future. And we need your help developing a transit system that works for you! Let us know what you think about our bus service proposals for late next year and early 2025. Submit feedback through Wed., Oct. 31 at trimet.org/plan. The proposals come from Forward Together, which is our roadmap for expanding service by 30% in the coming years and connecting many more people to transit.

Tilikum spires cables

Getting a one-of-a-kind view of Tilikum Crossing

The first-ever intensive examination of the cable system on our iconic Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People, just wrapped up. What a sight to see, as inspectors took to the bridge from all different angles, looking for defects that go beyond simple wear and tear. We took KGW’s cameras behind the scenes to get a look at the work and see the bridge like never before! Future cable system inspections will take place every four years. They come in addition to general inspections we do every two years with the Federal Highway Administration.

Hiring for maintenance positions and more

More than 60 people walked away from our October hiring event with conditional job offers and the opportunity to start a career with TriMet. Most of these jobs were with our Maintenance Division, and we’re still hiring! We’re offering a $2,500 bonus for many positions in maintenance. And yes, we’re still hiring bus operators. Visit trimet.org/careers to see if we might be the right fit for your next job or someone you might know.

hispanic heritage month bus on street 2023

Celebrating Hispanic heritage

If you haven’t seen our Hispanic Heritage Month bus out on the street just yet, prepare to be pleased. Many thanks to Hector H Hernandez for sharing his beautiful design. He calls it “Celebration of Legacy and Culture,” and you’ll be able to see the bus on various lines throughout our service area for about a year.

Calling all artists: We are currently accepting applications for designs for next year’s Celebrating Diversity buses. Visit trimet.org/callforartists to learn more. The application deadline is Nov. 15.

Did you know? You may qualify to ride for less.

More than 250 people signed up to receive Honored Citizen fare based on income, during a three-day registration event that we recently held at Portland State University. Students love saving money, and many like helping the environment by riding transit. If you enroll to receive TriMet’s reduced Honored Citizen fare based on income, you can ride TriMet as much as you want for just $28 per month. Visit trimet.org/save to learn more, see if you qualify and sign up online.
