Expanded service and changes start Sunday; FX stands for Frequent Express (and faster!); TriMet’s new home in Downtown Portland

Rolling out Forward Together service plans

We’re rolling out big changes to our bus service starting Sunday, Aug. 27. We’re expanding service on many lines that will see buses arriving more often, earlier and later in the day, and on weekends. It’s all part of Forward Together—our re-design of bus service to bring TriMet service to more people.

Almost a third of bus lines will see some sort of change—some as small as a schedule change—starting Sunday. A few lesser-used bus lines will be ending. Go to trimet.org and plan a trip for Aug. 27 or later to see how your travel might change.

Speeding up FX with transit signal priority

New data shows how FX—Frequent Express—is speeding up trips. A new type of transit signal priority is one of the features of FX that’s improving the ride!

A study commissioned by the Federal Highway Administration found that this AI-powered transit signal priority system is saving our FX2-Division  riders up to eight minutes in travel time per round trip. Ride FX three days per week, and you could get back more than 90 minutes per month when compared to our previous Line 2 bus service.

Improving elevator safety and reliability

One of the ways we’re looking to make our riders’ experience better is to keep our elevators working for those who need them. That’s why we’re going to once again limit the Hollywood Transit Center elevator to riders only, starting on or about Monday, Aug. 28.

Riders will not have to pay to use the elevator. But they will need to tap their Hop card, Hop ticket, contactless credit/debit card or phone (with mobile wallet enabled) on the black card reader located to the right of the elevator door.

This is part of a larger elevator safety and reliability project. The Hollywood Transit Center elevator will be a work in progress as we fine tune how the access control works.

Moving toward the finish line

Our four-month-long disruption of MAX Red Line service for A Better Red has passed the halfway mark. Shuttle buses will keep serving stations between PDX and Gateway Transit Center through Saturday, Oct. 21.

Crews have been busy over the past two months. They’re building a new MAX station at Portland International Airport and putting in a second track in areas that didn’t have one. We appreciate our riders’ patience during the work.  MAX Red Line service to PDX resumes Sunday, Oct. 22.

Committing to Downtown Portland

We’ve moved, but we’re staying in Downtown Portland! TriMet’s Administrative Headquarters is now located at One Main Place in the heart of downtown. (Previously, we had offices at the south end of downtown.) This demonstrates TriMet’s commitment to Downtown Portland and its post-pandemic revival.

We moved to One Main Place for its vibrant location, seismic resilience and favorable lease options. Our leadership and more than 260 other TriMet employees work out of the building.

Holding the winning ticket!

Your ticket to see the Portland Timbers or Thorns play at Providence Park will soon include a ride on TriMet! Starting in 2024, match day tickets will double as fare on our buses and MAX.

The tickets will be valid to ride three hours before the game starts through three hours after it ends. Hop on board and take the hassle out of going to the game. #RCTID

bus on tilikum

Speeding up transit with a one-of-a-kind view

From the nation’s longest car-free bridge to North America’s deepest transit station, our transit system is made of architectural wonders that keep buses and trains moving—and can only be experienced by riding transit.

Beginning Sunday, Aug. 27, you can hop on another bus line to ride over Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People. We’re moving Line 19 to the bridge. Line 19 has used the Ross Island Bridge, which can see up to 65,000 cars per day. Tilikum Crossing has zero cars! It's where form meets function, giving buses, trains and the people who ride them an advantage–a faster, more reliable ride, with a one-of-a-kind view.

#TBT Did you know? The OG

We call it “the OG articulated bus.” Our Facebook followers call it “legendary.” This #TBT photo of a vintage Crown-Ikarus bendable bus serving Line 57 received nearly 3,000 likes!

Anyone who’s been around a while (say 25 years) may remember these buses. They were used on select TriMet routes in the 1980s and 90s. The old “bendy buses” were high-capacity and  high maintenance! As a result, they were eventually phased out.

Articulated buses have come a long way since those days, and we brought them back for FX, our Frequent Express service.
