See what we've been up to at TriMet!

TriMet General Manager Sam Desue Jr. welcomes U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg with a handshake

Laying the groundwork for a better 82nd

A $630,000 grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) will help TriMet and our partners lay the groundwork for better bus service on 82nd Avenue. Special thanks to the Oregon Congressional Delegation for their work in securing the Areas of Persistent Poverty grant. It came just weeks after U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg hopped on board an electric TriMet bus to tour the corridor and see its challenges and opportunities firsthand.

Better, faster transit is one of those opportunities. Initially, funding from the grant will be used to improve safety and access on 82nd Avenue. Longer term, we will look at expanding TriMet FX(™) to 82nd and how zero-emissions buses could be part of it.

Speaking out on the future of transit

Metro would like to hear your thoughts on high-capacity buses and other ideas for improving transit for our region in the coming years. They’re gathering feedback on the 2023 Regional Transportation Plan.

Take part in their online survey or leave online comments on proposals through Aug. 25. Public input will help guide decision-makers as they work to finalize policies and projects that will shape our transportation system for the next 20 years!

Better Red MAX PDX airport station 2023

Making progress but disruption continues

MAX Red Line service to the airport continues to be disrupted as part of our A Better Red project. We’re doing our best to make the most of the shutdown and completing many smaller yet important projects along the way.

Work is on schedule. It includes a complete rebuild of the MAX station at Portland Int’l Airport. During this part of the project, shuttle buses are serving stations between Gateway Transit Center and PDX. MAX Red Line service will be fully restored on Sunday, Oct. 22.

Selecting new officers for our Board

Congratulations to our new TriMet Board officers! Ozzie Gonalez is President; Dr. LaVerne Lewis is Vice President; and Kathy Wai is Secretary/Treasurer. The Board selects officers every two years. This is the first time in TriMet history that all three officers are people of color. They serve on a Board that is also our most diverse – ever!

Celebrating our operators of the year!

Driving a bus is not easy. Neither is operating a MAX train. But our operators of the year sure make it look that way. Watch in this new video! Special shout-out to Bus Operator of the Year, Kit Freeman, Mini-Run (part-time) Bus Operator of the Year, Victoria Jeffrey, and Rail Operator of the Year, John Kim!

These three operators demonstrate exemplary attendance, job performance and customer service and were selected by their peers as the best of our best! We are so grateful for their dedicated service. Give them a wave and a smile if you see them out on the transit system.

Proclaiming ‘All are welcome'

Portland swelled with Pride the weekend of July 15-16, and we were so proud to be part of it! About 100 employees and their loved ones walked with TriMet in this year’s Pride Parade. They wore special t-shirts designed by local high schoolers. The shirt proclaimed “All are welcome,” on the front. On the back, it paid homage to the iconic Darcelle XV.

Two TriMet buses rolled in the parade -- one full-size, the other paratransit. Both were decorated with colorful imagery displaying historical LGBTQ+ figures and the diversity of the communities we serve. These beautiful buses will be serving communities throughout the region for the next year.

Recognizing Disability Pride Month

We’re also celebrating Disability Pride Month this July! TriMet thanks Ludivic Ulf for sharing their work for our first-ever Diversity Pride bus! It was developed and designed in partnership with TriMet’s Accessible Transit Program & LIFT paratransit service as well as our Committee on Accessible Transportation. The bus will be rolling with this look through 2024.

LRV 418 Before and after

Did you know? TriMet’s bus and train ‘livery’

Livery is a British term that Merriam-Webster defines as “an identifying design (as on a vehicle) that designates ownership.” TriMet rolled out our latest look back in 2019, with 64 new buses! We’ve continued to add buses with the blue and orange theme, and now, we’re putting it on MAX trains! Take a look at the transformation of LRV 418! The colors are a nod to our 50+-year history in the community (Who can forget our classic orange buses!), combined with current trends in the transit industry.
