See what we've been up to at TriMet!
TriMet will increase fares on Jan. 1, 2024. Our Board of Directors voted to adopt an increase at their May 24 meeting. Adult fares will go up 30 cents for a 2 ½-hour ticket and 60 cents for a day pass. Honored Citizen/Youth fares will go up by 15 cents for a 2 ½-hour ticket and 30 cents for a day pass. Single rides on LIFT paratransit will increase by 30 cents.
The monthly cap using our Hop Fastpass™ card will not change. That means people who use a Hop card and ride often will not experience an increase.
Board members also approved the budget for the coming year. Our FY2024 budget, which goes into effect July 1, 2023, includes $825.4 million in day-to-day operating expenses and $328.3 million in capital and operating projects. These expenses and other financial requirements bring the total value to $1.93 billion.
The adopted budget supports the rollout of Forward Together service improvements, continues work on A Better Red, expands bus electrification and includes ongoing financial assistance for riders with low incomes.
Service improvements are coming for some bus lines, starting Sunday, May 28. More than 10 miles of Line 17-Holgate/Broadway will see more buses arriving every 15 minutes or better, most of the day, every day!
We’re also adjusting some routes and schedules and updating bus stops at Parkrose Transit Center. These improvements are a hint at what’s to come with our Forward Together service plan. We’re rolling out the first big package of improvements, starting this fall!
TriMet values your experience and your opinion. Share it with us, by taking part in our short performance survey. Do you think it’s easy to plan trips on our transit system? How do you pay? How can we make riding easier? Share your thoughts before this year’s survey closes on June 15.
Here’s to our 2023 operators of the year! Keep an eye out for the winners and congratulate them the next time you ride!
- Kit Freeman is the Bus Operator of the Year.
- Victoria Jackson is the Mini-Run (part-time) Operator of the Year.
- John Kim is the Light Rail Operator of the Year.
All of the candidates for operators of the year demonstrate superior safety, customer service and overall job performance. The winners are then selected through a vote of their peers – the 1,400 bus and train operators who keep us moving, every day.
Special thanks to Tony Martinez, traffic reporter on Good Day Oregon, who emceed the event. Fun fact: Tony rode the Line 9 daily when he moved to Portland in the mid-1980s, without a car!
We’re gearing up for the next MAX disruption necessary to tackle major work on the A Better Red MAX improvements project. The next phase of the project begins June 18, and will last through Oct. 21. Shuttle buses will replace trains in serving stations between Gateway Transit Center and Portland International Airport. Crews will be building a second MAX Red Line track and renovating the PDX station during the disruption.
You can even plan ahead now! Riders with summer travel plans or who ride this stretch regularly should check out trimet.org/planner to find the fastest route around the disruption.
We’re testing out a new effort to improve the reliability of our public elevators. From June 12 through July 11, the elevator doors at Hollywood/42nd Ave Transit Center will only open if someone taps a valid plastic or virtual Hop card, Hop ticket, contactless payment card or phone with a virtual wallet on a card reader next to the elevator.
There will be no charge to use the elevator. Riders still need to pay their fare by tapping their fare at the Hop reader before riding. TriMet will have security staff in place at the elevator during the test period for help. They also will be collecting data as we look to future efforts to reduce misuse of the elevators to keep them working for those who rely on them.
Thanks to all who came to our Community Hiring Event at the DoubleTree Lloyd Center! We are reconnecting with many great candidates that we met, but there’s good news for everyone else: We’re still hiring! Visit trimet.org/careers for the full list of opportunities in a wide range of departments and divisions.
Maintenance is just one of them, as we showed hundreds of young people at the Oregon Tradeswomen’s Career Fair. Take a look!
TriMet employs some 3,000 people. They’re all focused in one way or another at keeping our transit system operating and our community moving.
One of the women who trains new rail operators to keep our MAX riders moving stumbled into a hobby she never expected! Instead of gliding across the rails, she walked across a stage – a pageant stage for Mrs. America, International! Watch Krista’s story.
Did you know the MAX Orange Line route has 25 art projects with more than 200 separate elements by 26 artists and 57 writers?
It's part of our Public Art Program and reflects the history of the communities between Downtown Portland and Oak Grove in north Clackamas County.
Ride the Orange Line to check it out!
