See what we've been up to at TriMet!
Start making plans! Our next big service disruption for work on “A Better Red” is coming soon when MAX Blue, Green and Red lines will be disrupted from Sunday, April 16 through Saturday, May 6. Shuttle buses will serve stations between Gateway Transit Center and the NE 7th Ave MAX station. During this time, Green Line trains will run only between Gateway and Clackamas Town Center, and Red Line trains will run only between Gateway and Portland International Airport.
We’re encouraging riders to plan an extra 30 minutes for travel during the disruption or take regular bus service or other transportation. Find details on getting around the disruption at trimet.org/improvements.
Our proposed budget for the coming year includes $817.3 million for day-to-day operations and $322.3 million for capital investments. The budget includes service improvements from Forward Together, substantial completion of “A Better Red,” new investments in bus electrification and continued efforts to help riders struggling financially access transit. It balances priorities with ongoing efforts to restore our workforce, increase ridership and maintain a transit system that is safe and welcoming.
Ahead of their vote in May on a possible fare increase, our Board of Directors received an outreach report detailing the results of our public survey on the proposal, as well as feedback provided at open house events held earlier this year. The Board was also briefed on the results of a formal equity analysis of the proposal, known as Title VI. They’ll take all of the information into consideration before their vote.
The final chance to provide feedback will be during the public testimony at the Board’s meetings in April and May. Learn more at trimet.org/meetings/board.
There is a new affordable housing option in Clackamas County! It comes as a result of TriMet’s Transit Oriented Development program and partnerships with more than half a dozen public and private stakeholders. The Fuller Station Apartments sit on a parcel of our Fuller Rd Park & Ride. The site provides residents with excellent access to MAX Green Line and Frequent Service buses on Line 72-82nd/Killingworth.
The first two of our 30 shiny, new “Type 6” MAX trains have been delivered! The light rail vehicles sport our new dark blue and orange stripe color scheme. They’ll replace our original “Type 1” MAX trains that have been serving Portlanders since 1986! The new additions expand our fleet to serve more riders with the completion of the “A Better Red” project.
The train cars are trucked in from California on giant flatbeds. They’ll be staged in one of our rail yards for several months as they undergo testing and other activities required to prepare the trains for service. Before any riders climb on board these new trains, they’ll log 5,000 training miles. That’s the equivalent of 75 round trips along the length of the MAX Blue Line, from Gresham City Hall to Hillsboro. Follow the progress at trimet.org/max6.
We are the proud recipients of two Daily Journal of Commerce (DJC) “Building Diversity” awards. The DJC is a national publication that covers construction, real estate and legal news. Its annual awards program recognizes achievements in diversity, equity and inclusion within the local building industry.
Congratulations to John Gardner, TriMet’s first Inclusion, Equity, Diversity and Access Chief, for his recognition. The DJC also honored our Division Transit Project that achieved a record participation rate for disadvantaged businesses through our partnership with Raimore Construction.
We have something to say to everyone who shared messages of support and appreciation for our operators as we celebrated Transit Driver Appreciation Day: THANK YOU! This was our 10th celebration using the special day to give extra recognition to our operators. Hundreds of people converged on Downtown Portland in an all-day appreciation on March 17.
TriMet is fortunate to have nearly 1,400 bus and train operators delivering vital transportation service throughout our region. If you know someone who would be great for our team, they can visit trimet.org/careers to learn more.
There’s still plenty of time to hop on board our special Women’s History Month bus! It’s decorated with a mural created by Portland-based artist, Addie Boswell. She calls it, “Making Waves.” The bus is the latest in our Celebrating Diversity Bus Wrap Project. It will be serving communities throughout our service district for the next year.
Do you recognize this MAX train? Look closely. It’s one of our 26 original Type 1 trains! Those MAX cars have been in service since we opened MAX in 1986.
The Type 1s are easily recognizable by the three steps at each entry. In the early years, riders with mobility devices used a special lift, installed at the platform, to safely board the train. MAX later became the first light rail system in North America to run low-floor vehicles when our Type 2 trains rolled into service in 1997.
