Recovering from historic snow

Along with the rest of our region, we’ve been responding to another historic weather event. The February 23 storm ranked as the second largest one-day snowfall in Portland’s record books. It surprised almost everyone, weather forecasters included!

We have been making adjustments for the safety of our riders, employees and equipment. We thank our riders for their patience and understanding through weather-related delays, disruptions and cancellations. We're extremely grateful for our employees, who have kept the transit system moving through challenging conditions.

If there is potential for severe weather in the forecast, always check trimet.org/alerts before you travel! Our website is your #1 source for up-to-date information about service.

Coming soon: New Frequent Service

Great news! TriMet is adding to service improvements planned in 2023. Beginning in May, we’ll add buses to a popular stretch of Line 17-Holgate/Broadway, bringing it up to Frequent Service.

That’s part of a number of upgrades we’re working on. See what improvements our Forward Together Service Concept will bring in 2023 and early 2024 at trimet.org/plan.

Weighing in on our fare proposal

There are just a few days left to take our fare increase proposal survey. The survey at trimet.org/fareproposal closes after Saturday, Feb. 25. The public can still provide feedback at TriMet Board of Directors meetings in March, April and May before the Board votes in May.

The current proposal would increase fare for 2 ½-hour and day passes beginning Jan. 1, 2024. Monthly and annual fares would not change under the current proposal. Find all of the details at trimet.org/fareproposal.

Offering lower fares to more people

More people can qualify to ride TriMet for less under new federal poverty guidelines for 2023. This year’s increase by the Department of Health and Human Services means that anyone who earns up to $29,160 per year, or who participates in a qualifying program such as OHP or SNAP, can sign up for our reduced fare. Earnings increase by $10,280 for each additional person per household. Visit trimet.org/lowincome to learn more and get a month of rides–free!

Those age 65 and older and people with disabilities also qualify for our Honored Citizen reduced fare. Learn more at trimet.org/reduced

Showing appreciation for our operators

Mark your calendar for Friday, March 17 and join us in a simple act of kindness: thanking your bus or train operator! We’re celebrating Transit Driver Appreciation Day a day early this year.

Keep an eye on TriMet’s Facebook page for opportunities to get involved. If nothing else, we invite you to say thanks in your own way. Leave your driver with a smile, kind word or a wave. You can also recognize their work by leaving a commendation at trimet.org/hello.

Thanking our region’s lawmakers

Special thanks to U.S. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, who secured $5 million to expand TriMet’s bus electrification charging stations at our Merlo Operations Facility in Beaverton. The funding was included in the U.S. Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, signed into law late last year. We also appreciate the work of U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer and former U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader (D), who obtained funding that will help TriMet improve transit stations and infrastructure in their districts.

Seeing ‘Music’ fill the air

Have you seen the new mural along our FX2-Division route? Created by Angelina Marino-Heidel and her husband, Joel Heidel, “The Music” was painted by the community as a special activity during our FX2-Division Grand Opening Celebration last September.

Now, it’s found a permanent home on the Cascadia Health building at Southeast 42nd Avenue and Division Street. Our FX2-Division buses pass this location nearly 200 times every day! The mural is one of the finishing touches of the Division Transit Project, which laid the foundation for FX!

Orange bus prepcs 6h morrison historical photo

Did you know? Back when Pioneer Courthouse Square was a parking lot. #TBT

One of our most popular posts on Facebook this month shows a bright orange bus passing through the intersection of Southwest 6th and Yamhill. It captured a moment in time, at a location barely recognizable as “Portland’s Living Room.”

Pioneer Courthouse Square replaced the parking lot in 1984. TriMet’s Customer Assistance Center (now called TriMet Customer Support Center) opened later that year, and it’s had a home at the square ever since! And as for those orange buses, we retired the last one back in 1990.
