Sharing feedback on major proposals

There’s still time to share feedback on TriMet’s proposed fare increase for 2024 and our first Forward Together service improvements. Open houses around those topics are wrapping up early next month, but there are still plenty of ways to weigh in.

Visit trimet.org/plan or trimet.org/fareproposal to learn more about the proposals, leave your feedback and complete the fare proposal survey by Feb. 25. We’ll gather all of the comments and ideas we receive and present them to our Board before they take action in April and May.

Returning FX buses to service

Our big green FX buses return to service on the FX2-Division line this Sunday, Jan. 29!

We pulled the FX buses from service in November after finding an issue with bolts becoming loose. TriMet’s discovery led to an industry-wide recall. We worked directly with manufacturer Nova Bus, to identify the fix and install it on our buses. Then our operators got some refresher training on the bendy buses.

Many thanks to our riders for their patience as we worked to get the FX buses back in service safely.

Hiring event full room maintenance DoubleTree

Hiring operators and much, much more!

We’re continuing to grow our team of bus and rail operators while recruiting talent for workgroups across the agency. Our January hiring event for Maintenance Service Workers brought in nearly 170 applicants. More than 60 walked away with conditional job offers!

If you know someone who would be great for TriMet, please share trimet.org/careers for opportunities available across divisions and departments. We’re planning another big hiring event in March. Watch for details in our February newsletter.

Saying hello to more security staff

We grew our security teams in 2022. We nearly doubled or doubled our Customer Safety Supervisors, Customer Safety Officers, Transit Security Officers and Safety Response Team members. Learn about what these teams do at trimet.org/personnel

Coming this year, we’ll add even more security staff and put more focus on areas and times when we’ve seen inappropriate activity.

Standing up for equality

Ride TriMet for free on Saturday, Feb. 4, in honor of Rosa Parks’ historic stand for equality! TriMet, C-TRAN and Portland Streetcar are joining together for the third straight year to celebrate transit equity by suspending fare collection for the day.

Some riders will also be treated with a seat on our special Rosa Parks tribute bus! It’s decorated with images and symbols of the march toward civil rights. TriMet thanks Portland-based artist, Hampton Rodrguez, for sharing his vision of Rosa Parks’ legacy in the design. The bus will serve communities throughout our service area for the remainder of the year.

Celebrating Black History Month

We’re celebrating Black history throughout the month of February. Keep an eye out for our new Black History Month bus! It’s the first to roll out from our Celebrating Diversity Bus Mural Project, which is part of TriMet’s Public Art Program.

Artist Habiba Abdul Rahim describes the untitled work as a “piece about Black love.” She says it serves as a “reminder about the ways in which we can (and do) support, respect and love each other.” Learn more, including how to apply for your design to appear on a bus, at trimet.org/publicart.

beter red construction

Marking a milestone

We’re halfway there with the construction of A Better Red! Progress has moved ahead steadily since the MAX extension and reliability project kicked off 16 months ago. Bridges to carry new MAX tracks are taking shape, utilities and sections of track have been moved and new track crossings have been built.

Once fully completed in 2024, the project will extend the MAX Red Line west 10 stations and keep trains moving systemwide by adding  another track near the Gateway Transit Center and Portland International Airport.

Did you know? How MAX got its name

max

Back in the mid-1980’s, TriMet held a contest to name our first light rail line. The contest was open to the public, but a TriMet employee actually landed the naming rights.

Jeff Frane says he was playing around with acronyms when he remembered a character from a book he once read to his young son. It featured a bunny named Max.

The ad agency running the contest wanted a name that was short and friendly. That’s how MAX – short for Metropolitan Area Express – was born.
