Building up disadvantaged businesses

Raimore Construction made history with the Division Project, which laid the foundation for FX. First, they won the largest-ever contract awarded in Oregon to a certified disadvantaged business enterprise (DBE). Then, under Raimore’s leadership, the project achieved another first: the highest-ever percentage of work done by DBEs on a major public transit project in Oregon.

To date, more than 75% of construction has been performed by firms owned by people who are economically or socially disadvantaged. TriMet awarded Raimore an award for creating a lasting legacy of lifting up other minority-owned businesses.

Moving ‘Forward Together’

We need your help to redesign TriMet bus service as the COVID-19 pandemic has changed when, where and how people travel. With Forward Together, we’re considering the biggest restructuring of our bus service ever!

Our Forward Together service concept would help more people get to more places and ensure that TriMet is meeting current and future riders’ needs. Are we heading in the right direction? Go to trimet.org/forward to see how our bus routes may change and take a survey to help shape a plan for our future.

Advocating for transit investments

TriMet General Manager Sam Desue Jr. was invited by Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) to testify at a special congressional hearing on infrastructure investments.

Desue thanked Congress for pandemic relief that kept TriMet and fellow transit agencies across the nation rolling. He encouraged further investments in transit to expand the services we provide our communities.

Welcoming new leaders

We’re excited to bring on two new executive leaders who share a history and passion for TriMet and the work we do. Inessa Vitko returns to TriMet as Executive Director of Transportation after four years of service as Chief Operations Officer at C-TRAN. Vitko began her transit career at TriMet 16 years ago and led our Customer Experience efforts before moving to C-TRAN.

Mark Dohn will soon step into his role as Executive Director of Engineering, Construction and Planning. Dorn is a seasoned transit professional with a body of work that spans more than 20 years. Among local transit projects, Dorn worked on the Portland Streetcar Eastside Extension, MAX Green Line Transit Mall renovation and the Southwest Corridor Light Rail Extension Project.

Did you know? Tunneling through the West Hills

In-service MAX trains first began rolling through Portland’s West Hills 24 years ago, thanks to something called “Bore-Regard” and a special type of grout.

To make way for the MAX Blue Line extension to the west side, TriMet had to find a way through the West Hills. Geologists recommended an impressive, 278-foot-long tunnel-boring machine, which came to be known as “Bore-Regard.”

Despite its size, “Bore-Regard” struggled as it tried to push through the loose, unstable rock of the Tualatin Mountains. After a nine-month pause, engineers finally found a solution that stuck: a special grout that held the rock together, as Bore-Regard and its 42 cutting blades finally “holed through.”

Westside MAX opened to the public on Sept. 12, 1998.
