COVID-19 Update: New options for those who could use help

The past weeks have been hard for all of us, and many in our community are facing challenging circumstances. Here are three initiatives we just rolled out that might help you or somebody you know.

Apply for Reduced Fares Online

Reduced fares may be an option if you’re struggling financially. If you’ve experienced a change in income like unemployment, you can qualify based on your estimated annual income.

We're also now temporarily offering the option to apply at home and get your reduced fare Honored Citizen Hop card by mail.

See if you qualify and apply online.

New Shuttle Bus to a Bottle Return Center

Starting Wednesday, April 29th, we’re adding a temporary shuttle bus — Line 297-NW Yeon/OBRC — that will provide an important connection to an emergency bottle return center in NW Portland.

For some, bottle deposits provide the only way they can support themselves. If you’re still riding, you may have noticed an increase in bottles and cans being brought on board.

Most bottle returns have closed, so Oregon Beverage Recycling Cooperative has opened an emergency bottle return at its headquarters. Governor Brown has asked for our assistance in helping members of our community get there, and we’re proud to answer her request.

This temporary shuttle bus line is free to ride. Buses will run between the Rose Quarter Transit Center and the bottle return center at 3900 NW Yeon Avenue, with one additional stop in NW Portland. Buses will run once per hour between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., seven days per week.

COVID-19 safety rules will still apply — social distancing and passenger limits are in effect, as they are on all our buses.

We do not restrict people from bringing bags of recyclables on board our buses and trains, just as we do not prevent people from bringing luggage or other bags. However, bags of cans and bottles that are leaking, foul smelling or so big or numerous that they block aisles are not permitted on any bus or train.

Free Grocery Delivery for LIFT Customers

LIFT paratransit serves members of our community who are especially vulnerable to COVID-19. These riders are staying home to protect themselves and ridership is down significantly.

So, we’re now offering a new option for LIFT customers: grocery delivery.

This free service will pick up grocery orders and bring them to the home of LIFT riders, allowing them to get the food and goods while still practicing physical distancing.
