Although the Cooling Portland Program stopped accepting applications for cooling units in July, PDX311 continued to serve as an important point of connection for community members seeking information and support. In July, 311 received 418 contacts related to Cooling Portland.
Call takers helped community members understand that the program had closed to new applications, and provided information about available cooling spaces for those seeking relief from the heat. For people who had already applied, 311 also provided information about the program’s waitlist and application status.
Cooling Portland advises that eligible applicants on the waitlist are prioritized based on risk factors, including being over age 60, having medical conditions that increase the risk of heat-related illness, or living alone. Community members with questions about the program, their cooling unit, or the status of an application can continue to call 3-1-1 for assistance.
