This fall, the Water Bureau will install 3,350 feet of water main (pipe) in Southwest Portland. The pipe sections we're replacing range from 60 to 110 years old. Inspections show that these pipes have reached the end of their useful life. Some of these pipes cross under busy roads like SW Barbur Boulevard and I-5.
This project will
- Protect infrastructure by reducing risk of main breaks and damage to roads
- Improve the reliability of water flow to surrounding neighborhoods
- Benefit over 42,000 people served by these water mains

Preliminary work this October
Crews are starting preliminary work on Water Bureau property near SW Tenth Avenue. Then crews will move down to S Nevada Street to install a drain point between S Virginia Avenue and S Macadam Avenue.
Survey and locate teams may also be in the area. Crews paint markings on the street in different colors to indicate the presence of underground utilities. They may also place small flags in the ground, or wooden stakes with ribbons.

Road closure
To prepare for this project, we need to do work at the intersection of S Laview Drive and S Corbett Avenue.
A section of S Laview Drive near S Corbett Avenue will be closed starting in mid-October for about one week.
Crews will:
- Cut the road surface and sidewalk
- Dig four access holes
- Locate the water main
- Install safety restraints
- Patch the road surface and sidewalks

Happening next
Main replacement work will begin in mid-November at the intersection of SW Chestnut Street and SW Burlingame Avenue. It will continue downhill along SW Chestnut Street, SW Fifth Avenue, and SW Nevada Street.
For this section of the project, we will install a water main by cutting the road surface, digging a trench, replacing the old pipe, filling the trench, and restoring the road surface.
